[Solved] concerning kernels

Post by rjsrjs »

Should I be concerned about having showing only a couple of kernels in "showing linux kernels"? It used to show a lot of other versions of kernels. Anything to be concerned about?
Thanks:

I've read somewhere that with at least 2 kernels you should be ok (the active one and another one to fallback onto if case need be)
not sure why you only see 2 now ,if you saw more before ,kernels don't delete themselves

I'd be more concerned why you're using an old unsupported kernel.

I just checked on my LM 19.3. K4.15.0-96 is the currently supported kernel in kernel series 4.15.0
My UM can display kernels for the series:
+ 4.15.0 (LTS and still supported)
+ 4.18.0 (short term and already dead)
+ 5.0.0 (short term and already dead)
+ 5.3.0 (short term and still supported)

I wonder which system the OP rjsrjs is using and why UM only displays 1 kernel series and only 2 kernels in it.

What karlchen says is correct, but Schultz is correct your screenshot reports 4.15.0-96 as unsupported. Moreover, I can think of no version of Mint which would display only the 4.15 kernel. Sounds like a post turtle problem. Care to explain how you got here?

Hello, rjsrjs.

Please, post the output, which the terminal command inxi -Sr will display.
Also, please, post the output, which the terminal command sudo apt-get update will display.
Finally, please, post the output, which the terminal command mintupdate --version will display.

Best regards,
Karl

Don't know why but after restarting my machine I now get other versions of kernels listed????
See attachment provided.

i upgraded from Mint 19.0 to 19.2 to 19.3, all successful in place upgrades which is why, I think, I have 4.15.xx kernels. I'm having no problems with Mint 19.3 at all though. Works perfectly.

Hi, rjsrjs.

I tend to conclude: one more mysterious phenomenon resolved by reboot.
Guess there is no really need to spend more time on trying to figure out what had prevented UM from displaying the full kernel list.

Best regards,
Karl

P.S.:
Your inxi report confirms that your system uses kernel K4.15.0-96. Line 2 of the inxi report. You just have to read it.

P.S.2:
There was no real need to post the command output which I had requested in order to get an idea what might be wrong, after the problem had vanished by a simple reboot. Neither of the 3 commandlines has displayed anything, which tells why UM had failed to display the full kernel lists initially.

Hi, rjsrjs.

Why so pessimistic? Has the reported phenomenon occurred more often in the past? - I have never seen it on any of my Mint systems so far.

I've never seen this particular quirk happen before. I don't check kernels all that often either. I have seen other quirks though like some times the calendar fails to load in the right side of the panel, a restart fixes that. That happens maybe once in a hundred startups. Also sometimes I want to create a new folder, I see nothing on the desktop to create a new folder. Usually forcing the desktop to reload cures that problem. Maybe doing several in place upgrades like I said previously is causing these quirks, I really don't know that for sure though.
