Screen freeze and must restart computer : how to investiguate ?

Post by thierrydez »

Hello,

On one of my computer, Linux Mint is freezing regularly. Often after launching a new program (for example Firefox), the screen freeze as you can see in the picture below : i can't do anything except reboot by pressing the ON/off switch. I have tried Mint Cinnamon and xfce, 19.3 and 18.3, same happen. Sometimes it works fine during several hours, sometimes only few minutes.
it happens since long time ago (don't really remenber, one years, maybe more) after a new installation, but before it was working fine.
I searched on internet but don't find any similar issue.
Any advice how to investiguate what can happen or (the best) any idea of solution ?

Below my configuration.

Thanks for any help or suggestion. Please use simple english language as i'm frensh :-)

A great thing to do would be to see if the same thing happens with the Live Mint.
If you boot up from DVD/USB and let us know what happens.

If the same thing happens, it might be your graphics card is on its way out.

When you reboot in future, instead of powering off which is bad, press the following keys:
Alt+PrtScrn. Keep them pressed then type the following, leaving a couple of seconds between each key press:
R E I S U B
(busier backwards)

That will stop your system being corrupted, which is very likely to happen if you just power off.

Welcome to the forums.
Well done for posting your inxi.

Try switching from the nouveau driver to the nvidia driver for your graphics. If you enabled 'install third party software' when you installed mint, it will have been installed. Don't use xfce but in cinnamon you find it under menu > admin > driver manager.

thanks for your proposal, here is the status after several test and several mint installation under different version:

@gittiest personITW
The same happen with Live Mint, I tired another time with live Mint 20 Cinnamon => same issue.

When frozen :
- no ssh access possible (wanted to check if only the screen if frozen, but no). as soon as frozen, i don't see any more disk access too.
- Alt+PrtScrn. and key press R E I S U B doesn't works (i tried before when system is not working fine just to be just i proceed well and it is OK)

@AndyMH
- On Mint 18.3 Xfce:
I was able to switch to nvidia-304 driver : seems working fine. would required more testing but positive => i stopped here to try more recent Mint
- Mint 19.3 Cinnamon:
No able to see any other driver.
I tried

Code: Select all

ubuntu-drivers devices
as advice here : https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-install- ... linux-mint but nothing is visible.
