autostart conkyfile on login

Post by Rootbeer »

in earlier versions of Mint I installed conky-manager where I had the option to set the conkyfile to autostart on login. Sadly conky-manager seems not to be supported anymore(?)

so, how do I get my .conky -file to autostart on login?

I'm running xfce and I've tried to add it as a startup-item on sessions-and-start, but that didn't work.

I used this command to the autostart-item:
"conky -c /home/rootbeer/conkyfile.conky &"

but that didn't work, it just starts up and disappears after 0,5 sec.

You might like to try Conky Manager 2 by forum user zcot. I use it myself. While you have to compile it yourself, zcot has made it very simple.

Otherwise, try adding a delay to your original conky startup command, such as this:

Code: Select all

sh -c "sleep 10; conky -c /home/rootbeer/conkyfile.conky &"

As if the window composition manager hides it... There should be a setting to disable the window effects in XFCE. Can you disable it and restart the sesion to verify if this is the case, please?

Besides, are you able to see it on the desktop when you run this line from the console?

N.B. Do what MrEen says, first.

this worked great, thank you :)

btw, thats the difference between starting the conkyfile with bash and with sh ?

Either will work, and I usually use bash myself, but some recommend always using sh unless bash is actually needed. i.e. there are some command only in bash that are not available with sh.

I think sh is known to be a little faster as well.

I'm glad the sleep command helped. I noticed I had a large sleep in my settings, that's why I suggested it.
