I did a one off defeat of the snap blocking file according to the Fossbytes link below to get chromium.
Worked fine. I don't know about updating. Maybe will have to go though the same process again.

https://fossbytes.com/how-to-enable-sna ... x-mint-20/
If you installed Chromium as a snap, then it will update in the background when a new version is release, you have no real control, but it will update.

Went to the release page and saw someone recommended slimjet chromium.

Installed it, logged into my google account, synced and now I have all my history, bookmarks, etc. Plus it seems very light on resources.

You might report back here after some experience with Slimjet. After wasting time I haven't chased little indy browsers in recent years, but the current consensus on web development for the Chromium platform might have changed the situation. (I silo Google services and some tech-related sites in Chrome/Chromium under a nonsense no-credit-card identity, using Firefox for anything personal.)

i don't understand the mentality when it comes to Chromium or chromium based browsers >>> ALL CHROMIUM BROWSERS SEND DATA BACK, THIS INCLUDES CHROMIUM, CHROME, VIVALDI, BRAVE, SLIMJET

just install any freaking browser already why is everyone snapping about chromium not being available?

Because to be truthful out of the 5 computers in the house there is one that I really care about security. That is my main computer that I do business with, pay invoices, etc.

The other computers are for play and convenience. I know people who are almost tin foil hat crazy, some won't use a smartphone that has GPS capability, one woman thinks the government has placed chips in vaccinations, so she won't get vaccinated. Computers are a tool to be used and leave it up to me to decide how much I lock it down. I've caught flak from people who think I'm crazy because my computer logs on without having to give a password. The horror! Again these are my toys. Because of my age (yep there is an age you start forgetting) I also have to rely on password managers that keep my info on their servers. Can they be hacked? If DOJ and NASA can be hacked, a password manager server can be hacked.

There are 4,987 active satellites in 2019 according to the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs. Some of those have very good lens on them and can see you.

It is the world we now live in and that "ain't" going to change. All the above doesn't mean we are stupid and give information to a telemarketer that says they are with Microsoft and please give us access to your computer.

Not all, check out Ungoogled Chromium.
Actually, Mint's talk about this option here

How to get Ungoogled Chromium on Mint:

Code: Select all

echo 'deb http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/ungoogled_chromium/Ubuntu_Focal/ /' | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/home:ungoogled_chromium.list
wget -nv https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:ungoogled_chromium/Ubuntu_Focal/Release.key -O - | sudo apt-key add -
apt update
apt remove --purge chromium-browser
apt install ungoogled-chromium

Thanks for the commands.

I saw that the other day but I think what had me confused was something about Bionic or Focal. At the moment I can't remember I've been out all day in the yard with a mattock in 95 degree heat. Toasted and done for the day.

For a long arrangement I recommend Slimjet https://www.slimjet.com/en/dlpage.php

Chromium has been around forever --- why make it so hard?

Has anyone tried the method described in the link below to install Chromium?

https://linuxmint-user-guide.readthedoc ... ian-buster

Seems to be quite straightforward and reliable since comming from Debian repos.

But pay attention to the warning:

# Don't install anything other than chromium from the Debian repos

Has it been considered to simply package Chromium as deb (or even flatpak) for LM 20 instead of this dummy package?
For new users the current list of workarounds isn't particularly suitable, in my opinion.
I really hope that we get something like that in a point release.

While I don't like Ubuntu's "snap-creep" either, I think the way LM 20 handled this problem could definitely use some refinement.

And as a sidenote: I wonder if there will be a shift towards LMDE going forward, neatly sidestepping snap altogether. Maybe that's the basket where mint-coloured eggs really belong in... ;)

Has anyone tried this: https://fosspost.org/tutorials/chromium ... untu-20-04
I used saiarcot895 PPA's for about 9 months a while back with no problems. At the time it was pretty much the only way to get a browser with proper hardware accelerated video decoding on Mint.

The Debian apt pinning method as currently provided has a couple of weird side-effects - I'd avoid that for the time being.

And then there is this...

http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/202 ... ntu-20-04/

https://launchpad.net/~xalt7x/+archive/ ... -deb-vaapi

In contrast to saiarcot895 PPA's and ungoogled-chromium it's an unofficial PPA that contains the stable Chromium .deb packages for Ubuntu 20.04 and its derivatives with VAAPI support, and it comes with all the Google services. The PPA is pre-installed to the Ubuntu MATE based respin “Li-f-e” (Linux for Education 20.04) and it should be pretty safe. I've been using it for a couple of months and it has been great so far.

@smurphos

Maybe you should include it in your excellent Linux Mint User Guide as an option.

The Ubuntu Handbook author Ji m is the guy who provided the unofficial PPA for Darktable 3.x last December when the fellow who had been doing it left off. That has become the only current PPA for Darktable. Lends this credibiity in my book.

(I am giving it a shot on a test thumb drive to consider replacing Google Chrome, although Slimjet Chrome also seems interesting. Would replace Chrome if Chromium a) installs and works right, and b) gets timely updates.)

Ultimately Clem will be the arbiter of what's in the new user guide but I'll take a look and can suggest it's inclusion.

Slimjet Chrome also seems interesting.
Been using slimjet on the kitchen computer, the one that started this affair. I like it, it seems fast, I synced my account and it is good. A couple things (icons) are on the menu bar that I haven't figured out how to remove but I don't use that computer very often but imagine that there is a way to do it.

no you can not remove icons from the menu. this is the way chromium was initially developed. developers are crazy sometimes this way. early they decided to not have extensions icons in menu, then they added all extensions in menu. since slimjet is running on an older version of chromium you can't use the new feature in which all icons from menu are now gone and into their own category on the title bar next to the user icon.
slimjet is a nice browser but ugly as hell. vivaldi is very pretty and shiny but user has no control over major settings.

I'm trying the Ubuntu Handbook on a persistent live USB (M20 Cinnamon) side by side with Chrome, and no performance difference. My one reservation is whether the PPa will supply version updates on schedule. [As of Sunday 13 July stable Chrome updated in Synaptic PM to v. 83...116-1 while the Chromium install remains at 83...97. We'll see.]

On my one regular install of M20 XFCE with only Google Chrome installed, a strange thing happened with the Update Manager - it suddenly listed the Flatpack Chromium for installation (which I promptly kiboshed). Made me wonder if Chrome or alternative browsers are triggering something in the repo that then seeks to install / update the Flatpack version of Chromium. Seems to chime with this topic, so I mention it.
