Linux Mint 19.3 Mate.
I have Dropbox installed, and use it very infrequently.
Whenever I have used it, it stays selected in Start-up Applications, and I don't need this.
How can I prevent this from happening, please?

Did you try to see what settings are enabled in the Dropbox program itself? I would try to disable it there first.

Re: How to pevent Dropbox from auto-starting?
I do not use Dropbox but I know there was an option to enable/disable autostart when I used it ten years ago. Sorry that I cannot help.
Maybe try to remove it from the startup applications.

Tried removing from Start-up Apps, but it re-appeared on reboot.
Found it!
Auto-start disabled in Preferences, found in Icon drop-down menu.
Many thanks.
