Nemo File Manager - Slow Launching After Mint 20 Installation

Post by Erastothenes »

Hi All

I was running Linux Mint 19.3 with no issues and upgraded the 19.3 installation to version 20. I then noticed issues with Nemo file manager which took 10-20 seconds to launch and load.

A few days later I reinstalled Mint 20 on a brand new SSD on the same PC and found that I had the same problem with Nemo taking 10-20 to launch and load.

What I find is that if I have Nemo active in one window then I can launch further Nemo instances with no problem. The problem is intermittent and sometimes Nemo launches immediately. I get the a similar problem when Nemo is being launched from applications to manage files.

I've had "top" running in terminal but cannot see anything obvious. I have the same applications installed on version 20 that I had installed on 19.3 so the issues appears to be related to Mint 20.

Has anybody had similar issues after installing Mint version 20 or maybe has an idea of what could be causing this problem?

Thank you in advance for any help or information that other members might be able to contribute to this post.

Exactly the same issue. Ha, at least you saved me the time of a fresh install since it doesn't seem to resolve.

I haven't noticed this on my LM20 install.

Couple things I would check:
1) Do you have all the updates installed?
2) Are you using the same theme as you did in LM19?
3) Do you have any crash reports listed in System Reports?

Edited to add: Also verify that you do have Nemo version 4.6.4.

Hi - welcome to the forums both - this may shed some light on what's causing Nemo issues launching for you. Open a terminal and run

Code: Select all

nemo -q
followed by

Code: Select all

NEMO_DEBUG=Application NEMO_BENCHMARK_LOADING=1 nemo --debug
Then report the output - copy and paste from the terminal window into your reply in between

tags

Sample output (dual pane view by default) - I've got no complaints about nemo performance

Code: Select all

Couple things I would check:
1) Do you have all the updates installed?
2) Are you using the same theme as you did in LM19?
3) Do you have any crash reports listed in System Reports?

Edited to add: Also verify that you do have Nemo version 4.6.4.
Thank you, SMG.

All updates are installed.
Same themes.
No crash reports.
Using version 4.6.4

Thanks. So there's a big gap in the output timestamps and I note there's no output showing interaction with /org/cinnamon/desktop/wm/preferences/. What I can't be sure of is the significance of that.

Shot in the dark - does this command run in a terminal return any output?

Thank you, smurphos. Here is the output:-

Code: Select all

find: ‘/home/myusername/pCloudDrive’: Permission denied
/home/myusername/pCloudDrive
I run the pCloud synch app for cloud storage. I did try closing this app but it didn't stop the issue with Nemo. Just wondering if this message has any relevance to what might be causing the problem. Never had a problem with pCloud in 19.3.

Thanks - interesting that the directory came up as permission denied even when running find with sudo. That probably shouldn't be happening.

What does this command return?

Code: Select all

stat /home/myusername/pCloudDrive
Does nemo open quicker using a different directory? In a terminal

Code: Select all

nemo -q

Code: Select all

NEMO_BENCHMARK_LOADING=1 nemo /usr

Thanks,

I don't think the pcloud folder is relevant, but given that another directory launches quickly it seems there is something to do with your home folder slowing nemo down. Is /home on a separate partition?

Thank you for getting back to me, smurphos.

Pretty sure that /home is not on a separate partition.

I have included two images from Gparted and Disks.

Hope this helps. Not sure if something might be wrong here.

I installed onto a new SSD and let the installer do the automated process.

Should it be fat32?

Nothing obviously unusual there. Have you customised folders at all (changed folder icons, colours, added emblems?)

What does this command return

Code: Select all

cat ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs

UPDATE 15/08/2020: THE ISSUE IS STILL CAUSING ME PROBLEMS AND HAS RESISTED ALL ATTEMPTS TO RESOLVE IT. CURRENTLY TESTING OTHER DISTROS AS I USE MY DESKTOP FOR WORK. THANK YOU FOR ALL THE HELP - MOST APPRECIATED.

Thank you for the reply, smurphos. All I have changed in Nemo is folder colours from green to yellow and added a few bookmarks.

Oddly, the issue has not recurred in the last 12 hours or so. I need to give it a little more time to be sure as the problem was intermittent but still a fairly regular occurrence. I have been keeping up with Mint updates so I'm wondering if either an update or something else I have done has corrected the issue.

Hard to tell as I have made no particularly significant configuration changes but I'll give it another 24 hours and and see what happens before closing this thread.

Most odd and I did my research on Google before coming on here but there was no obviously useful information for this specific problem.

Thank you so much for your help so far, smurphos and I really do appreciate it very much. I ran the command you suggested and have left the output below, just for the record should this issue recur.

I'm experiencing the same problem with a similar setup. I'm not using pCloud but I do use Dropbox. Although I'm not convinced that this is a network issue as it still happens with the network disconnected.

The problem is not just limited to Nemo, it also affects the Nautilus and Thunar file managers.

It doesn't seem to affect the KDE Dolphin file manager. However, dolphin doesn't operate well or look very good in Cinnamon.

Similarly, it also affects the Gnome based Brassero DVD burner but not the KDE K3b burner.

Not all Gnome based software is affected though.

As yet, I've had no luck tracing the problem.

Whatever these file managers are doing, it's happen both when the application opens and when it closes. It takes 20 seconds for the application to appear. It also appears to close immediately, but it's hanging around in the system for 20 seconds or so after closing.

[EDIT]

Having investigated a bit more, as the problem seems to get worse when I installed other file managers...

One forum suggested resetting Tracker. I tried this only to find that Tracker started reading and writing my SSD heavily, which I wasn't happy about. Also, Dolphin installed another tracker called Baloo, which was also putting heavy usage in the SSD.

I uninstalled both Tracker and Baloo, which also removed Nautilus and Dolphin, then rebooted the system. The problem with Nemo seems to be solved for now, it starts instantly.

It might be worth checking whether you have either Tracker or Baloo installed. If you have, remove them. Nemo doesn't need a tracker.

Hi empusa

Thanks for the valuable feedback; very much appreciated. I thought that I'd solved it too a couple of times but the problem recurred in the end and I use my workstation in my business so could not tolerate any further issues.

As aforesaid, 19.3 was fine and the problem only started when I upgraded to version 20. I then flattened and installed version 20 from scratch on the same machine but the problem was still there so is something to do which version 20 and my machine - somehow.

I'm using Kubuntu at the moment and having no problems whatsoever so will stick with it for the foreseeable future. Always rather liked KDE anyway so no great hardship.

That's one of the great things about Linux, freedom of choice and numerous distros and it can sometimes be a godsend in situations such as this one.

I have the same problem. I noticed than when I turn off the VPN the problem stops.
I am guessing the VPN interferes with the Nemo connecting and loading data from the NAS.
Hope that helps.
