Warpinator can only see the other PC if running from live media

Post by BrunoMiranda »

I had some issues getting Warpinator to open but I've ran

Code: Select all

sudo apt install python3-pip
sudo pip3 install packaging
and after this it opens on both computers now.
While opening it flashes for a moment a message stating something like Something went wrong, please check the logs (my locale is non-English) but then it proceeds searching for other computers, failing after a while. After this it just stays there stating no other computers can be found.
Nothing is written to /var/log. If not here, I don't know where warpinator logs should be.

But if I run any one of the computers from live media (checked on either both computers), warpinator works just fine, both computers see each other and share files as they should.

Both computers can ping each other and they have the same default Group Code (Warpinator) and firewall port (although firewalls are off for testing purposes).
Both computers are using Mint 20 Cinnamon, up to date and running the same version of Warpinator.
(basically these installations are clones made with fsarchiver, so the problem on one of them should be the same on the other one)

So this seems to be about computers publishing and advertising themselves on the network or being able to find other computers as if I run one of them from live media they find each other and then all works fine.

Any hints?
Thank!
Bye for now,
Bruno

This is in the "any" hints category since I'm new to Warpinator. You may get much better suggestions from somebody more knowledgeable.

First, since live media are working, you don't mention if you did the same updating of Warpinator to the current version, and then used the same python3-packaging fix as on the regular installs. I first tested Warpinator on an un-updated LM20 Cinnomon thumb drive and it worked, but it then failed to launch on an updated XFCE install, which sent me here looking for fixes. The fix you used is the second I've seen, this one has worked for me - running it may just tell you it's already been done with the other procedure:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt install python3-packaging

Second, your live media success seems to eliminate hardware / connection problems. Since you used the very same installation procedure for the two PCs having the same problem, it might be something about that: it's a nuisance, but you might download, create new install media - maybe using a different tool, e.g. mkusb instead of rufus or whatever - and reinstall Mint on one PC to see if Warpinator works right. (You'd obviously ensure data is backed up, but if they're recent installs you might not have invested hours of effort into setting them up.)
TRUST BUT VERIFY any advice from anybody, including me. Mint/Ubuntu user since 10.04 LTS. LM20 64 bit XFCE (Dell 1520). Dual booting LM20 XFCE / Win7 (Lenovo desktop and Acer netbook).

Thanks for your reply, I2k4.
Your reply brought up one thing to my mind that is messing up with it: updating software apart from apt.
I've just jumped from LMDE2 to Mint20 and there are always new things. And they might not be necessarily good, at least for me. I was very very happy on LMDE2 land with everything the way I wanted and needed but since it reached security updates EOL I had to bite the bullet and upgrade. (I had a Mint 19 installation, from .0 to .3 and now upgraded to Mint 20 but I never used it until now, I'm becoming a luddite...)

So back to the subject, I still thought that on Mint 20 apt should take care of maintaing all software. And we've got snaps, app-install, and now pip3...
apt told me youtube-dl was up to date (the version was from March) and now pip3-update sends me a new version down the pipe. Synaptic shows me a March version and pip3 one from July. I purge youtube-dl with apt I still have it running (from pip3). And I now I feel lost regarding what can be updated with apt and with pip3 and what software I have in my system and what versions are installed and even which one I'm running.

Regarding warpinator, I've tried to update from 1.0.7 it and I got this in red:

Code: Select all

sudo pip3 install -U warpinator
ERROR: Could not find a version that satisfies the requirement warpinator (from versions: none)
ERROR: No matching distribution found for warpinator
So meh... Me is lost! :?
I had to install python3-packaging to get warpinator running, but now pip3 can't seem to manage it. Me is lost!
Bye for now,
Bruno

That's a new one on me. Can't help. Personally try to avoid tweaks on regular Mint installs that I can't pretest successfully on a thumb drive install first. I've stayed away from Flatpak and Snap so far, requiring (hopefully temporary) workarounds on LM20/Ubuntu 20.04 for Cherrytree and XnViewMP via apt. The one maybe unusual thing I do is install a ppa for apt-fast as a first step with a new installation.

https://www.explorelinux.com/apt-fast/

You may have good reasons for pip3, but might be worth rethinking on a fresh install. By the way Warpinator 1.0.8 just showed up in the Update Manager, I'd assume it takes care of that problem.

Just ran 1.0.8 on my machines now there's a proper release in the repositories for Debian too, it works nicely and I can see it will come in handy :)

Thanks for letting me know there's a new version of Warpinator.

I'll check it out just to sort if it's working or not.
Meanwhile I have ditched it because I have no use for it, I've set up a Samba server that's more practical for my personal needs.
Not to say Warpinator doesn't have its uses, purposes and usefulness, it certainly has been important for file sharing by the Mint Team while developing Mint.

Regarding the software managed by pip3, here's what I have on my computer:

Code: Select all

bruno@LM20:~$ pip3 list

If it's not solved I'm not going to mark it as such as that would be misleading. Also, if marked as solved, people would read until the end of this thread looking for a solution only to find out that the only news was an update that didn't work for me.

I have dropped the intent of using warpinator but I haven't quit trying and testing out solutions people can still provide and eventually a solution useful to the community can be found. That's different from abandoning it. I still care and I'm still here.

Your output is exactly the same as mine on Mint 20 Cinnamon. I just wanted to check your dependencies and indeed, they apparently, are okay.

As I commented before, sometimes when it it opening it states some temporary error like Something wrong has happened, recommends log checking and then it goes on apparently normal until it fails finding other computers.

I have no warpinator logs neither in /var/log or anywhere else, so knowing their name and where to find those logs would be very helpful.
So if anyone knows where its logs should be, please let me know. Thanks.
