[SOLVED] I Want My LibreOffice Menu Icons Back!

Post by cosmiclaser »

How can and configure or hack Linux Mint to get back the icons in my LibreOffice menus?
In the example below, I had menu icons in LibreOffice 6.3. BUT In version 6.4 (and 7.0+) they disappeared.

It would appear that this is a gtk3 change (or bug, if you prefer) and there seems to be little intention to change back, which I think is a great pity!

Hm. I just found out that I had to switch the icons in menus on explicitly in LibreOffice 6.1.5.2 as well.
Using the default setting "automatic" would switch them off here.
Tools Options Topmost section "Libre Office" in the left hand panel View
Section "Menu" in the right hand panel Icons in menu: show (default automatic really turns them off here)
OK, I admit that this is not really on a Linux Mint system, but on something very similar and Debian.

No, the icons in the menu windows are apparently no longer provided.
I also regret this new boredom ...

I could not find Visibility in Version: 6.0.7.3,
but for Icons I changed it from Automatic ( none would show ) to SHOW and Wallah!!!
now I have icons in the menu.

There seems to be no way to get the menu-icons back any more.
I am using LO-7.0.1.2 from the Libreoffice PPA and the menu icons are impossible to get back, and unfortunately there is no wish by the devs to have them back any more according to one reference I read but can no longer find.

then I would go back to the previous version.

there is never enough "improvements" in LibreOffice to make me want to update it ever.
I used 5.0 for years, and the only reason I have 6.x is because it came with 19.3 Cinnamon.

IMO, there have not been any "improvements" in LO since version 5.0

LO is available as an AppImage, and the repository has versions as old as v3.3.0. I think the last version to show the menu icons was 6.2.8.

Sorry, maybe I'm not enough intelligent but I understand absolutely nothing about why the bug has been classified as "WONTFIX" !! ??

https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/sho ... ?id=123265

Also, please note that icons are visible in KDE and Windows versions (6.4+, including 7.0)
Can someone explain to me ?

If you want change, you have to petition GTK developers directly. This has disrupted many other projects in the past: https://igurublog.wordpress.com/2014/03 ... mnemonics/

I want GNOME 2 back. Seriously.
This new, shallow, anorexic desolation pisses me off so much!

Alternative: Cinnamon (and other GTK-using desktops) could somehow work around the no-icons enforcement. LibreOffice GTK3 backend is said to respect the desktop-level setting.

I saw this explanation in the LibreOffice bug report:
What is being followed is the desktop-level setting. Perhaps Xfce or Cinnamon
desktops could somehow work around the GTK enforcement of no icons. In any
case, this is not the right place to complain.
(source) https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/sho ... ?id=123265

This goes with what Tonttu saided:

https://igurublog.wordpress.com/2014/03 ... mnemonics/

Where is this "desktop-level setting" ? Can we override it somewhere ? In Cinnamon/MATE/Xfce ? In GTK settings somewhere? Can I change it? Could Linux Mint override it ?

You should make a feature request for Cinnamon/MATE/Xfce and let the developers figure out, if it is possible.

You can also Tweet this on Twitter:
@GTKtoolkit Please Un-deprecate GtkImageMenuItem. We WANT icons in our menus. (LibreOffice, Inkscape, Gimp...)

Thank you!
I'm not sure if I voted by clicking on your link. Anyway, I clicked and would like to have - like you - colored menu windows with icons and keyboard shortcuts in the future.
In all applications.
