Gparted wont start

I installed Gparted via software manager. When I click on it, it asks for my password, which I provide and that's it. It just doesn't start. I rebooted several times, uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

running from the terminal:

Code: Select all

gparted
Unit boot.mount does not exist, proceeding anyway.
Unit tmp.mount does not exist, proceeding anyway.
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Try running it from the terminal (gparted) and post the results/errors here.

GParted isn't meant to be installed, because it's not very suitable except when used on a live medium. I recommend to stick to Disks and mintstick.

Thanks. I just used Disks, it isn't bad. I have installed and used Gparted in quite a few distros, but If it doesn't work on LM, Disks seems fine.

I have it installed on my machine (LM20 Cinnamon). I use it to manage unmounted USB storage devices. Installed using

Code: Select all

sudo apt install gparted

Think of it like driving a combat tank on a city street. The street should be able to take it, but the risk of damage is considerable. :mrgreen:

GParted is an extremely powerful and very useful tool, but there's risk of breakage and malfunctions when used on the same hard disk as the one that it's installed on. Hence I've learned to use it only when booted from a live medium (live USB thumb drive, DVD).

While I agree in principle with Pjotr, I'm curious as to why your system won't run it. You never did mention your OS version. I can't duplicate this error on either v19.3 (native) or v20 (in a VM).

Strange, I’ve Gparted (0.30.0) installed (19.3 Cinnamon) and start it from the menu,
- I shy away from terminal.
I’ve also a launcher on the desktop that starts it by /usr/sbin/gparted %f. In both cases at start syslog reports systemd[1]: Reloading.
Gparted has several features over Disks, but can’t handle loop and nbd devices, I need both.

It can handle loop devices, wouldn't expect it to work with nbd.

I use gparted all the time, sufficient that one of the first things I do on a fresh install is turn off the requirement for a password. I've used it on every version of mint from LM17.0 on, including LM20.0, and never had any installation problems.

Code: Select all

$ gparted
Unit -.mount does not exist, proceeding anyway.
Unit -.mount does not exist, proceeding anyway.
=======================
libparted : 3.2
=======================
(and after authentication it will open, no info in syslog)
- I have no idea what that could mean.

OT here, but I’d like to learn more about -> Gparted and loop devices

By some miracle, I managed to reinstall it and it now works. That was strange.
