Problem playing CD & DVD - M7 XFCE

Post by jaqian »

I installed Mint 7 with XFCE on a friends computer. None of his CD's or DVD's will play, I was wondering if the problem was with the codecs and whether or not they were automatically included.

I use M7 Gnome and have no problems myself.

Btw is XFCE pronounced as X-FACE? :)

Codecs are included. What do you mean "won't play"? When you insert the CD or DVD, does an application or question box pop up on screen? Can he play a music CD at least? What happens when you put a data CD in the CDROM drive?

When you use the file manager ("Computer" icon) can you see the disc in the player?

He gets " Could not open audio disc" error. Doh! I just realised what the problem is, his sound card isn't recognised. Thats why the audio software starts up but can't continue. Might try a different sound card see if that helps.

Hi jaqian,
Does Mint recognise the audio hardware ?
These two commands run from the terminal will determine the status :
  • aplay -l (small case L)
    lspci
You can copy/paste the output of those commands back here, and we MAY be able to help . . :)

EDIT : I've always pronounced it X-Force . . .
From their wiki :
How to pronounce Xfce and what it means

“Ecks Eff See Eee”. The name Xfce originally stood for XForms Common Environment, but since then, Xfce was rewritten twice and doesn't use XForms toolkit anymore. The name survived, but the F is nolonger capitalized (not “XFce”, but “Xfce”). Currently the acronym doesn't stand for anything (suggestion: X Freakin' Cool Environment).

Cheers I'll try that next time I'm at his place.

Well it looks like your card is detected correctly . .

Code: Select all

card 0: SI7012 [SiS SI7012], device 0: Intel ICH [SiS SI7012]

00:02.7 Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] AC'97 Sound Controller (rev a0)

Now you should check/change the different settings by first right-click -> properties on the speaker icon in the panel : Mine is a little different, but you can try the different mixer plugins.

And by left-clicking on the same icon try the different settings :
