Copying a file over 2gb with Nemo

Post by thedeerhunter270 »

I was trying to copy a file that is 2.1gb to a USB thumb drive. I got an error.

"18.4 EB more space is required to copy to the destination"

There was enough free space - so I tried another drive this time a USB HDD - and got the same error,

So copied the file with the terminal and it worked fine.

Is this a bug?

I'm going to say it is a bug for you, but not for everybody.
On my LM 19.3 Cinnamon I copy a 3.1 GB file to my 30 GB thumb drive (50% full) in about 5 minutes.
First 30 seconds is fast (30 MB/sec), then it decreases to 17 - 20 MB / sec. At 99% done it just freezes at "0 seconds left" for the last 2 minutes. But the window eventually goes away and zip file is successfully copied.
I have 12 GB RAM.

I get a similar copy speed - seem the same on all the Ubuntu based distros I've tried.

Good point - I will try on another machine to see if the error is replicated.

I should also add - if I ignore the error and 'copy anyway' it does appear to work successfully. But it was disconcerting.

Writes to FAT32, xFAT or NTFS drives can do that occasionally. There are submissions in the works from both Paragon and Microsoft to the kernel source which should eventually provide native kernel support that is more reliable than the current fuse offerings. They cannot come soon enough.

I have had issues with non native file systems like NTFS drives under Nemo, my "fix" was to just move everything to EXT4, Nemo has no problems for me moving very large files on native file systems, local or network.

You could try formatting the thumb drive as ext4 instead of the typical fat32, you will have to watch permissions bringing it to another computer though.
