problem using the software manager

Post by frozen toes »

Hi
I am trying to download and install programs from the softwere manager that is part of mint 19 OS system (download youtube video programs)

Sometimes when I select the one I want I am taken to a different dialog box where I get the option to install; I install from there but it times out. On other ocasions it downloads and I press the launch tab but nothing happens!

Any ideas please?

Reason: Title: typo corrected. It is "Software Manager", not "wear" like "clothes" ;-)

If you have a good internet connection I suspect you need to change to a closer/faster repository. Open Update Manager, and from the Menu bar select Edit>Sources. Click the Main repository and select the fastest mirror. Repeat for Base repository.

It would help to know more about your system. Open a terminal, Copy/Paste the following command, and then post the output. Be sure to enclose the output in Code Display tags - that is the </> icon.

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz
On other ocasions it downloads and I press the launch tab but nothing happens!
Do you recall the name of the "nothing happens" programs? It could be a program that is run from the command line.

Open Update Manager, and from the Menu bar select Edit>Sources. Click the Main repository and select the fastest mirror. Repeat for Base repository.
That option is not there!
Look in Update Manager. Or open Software Sources from System Settings. You can also access sources from Synaptic Package Manager.

From the description of Youtube-dl:
youtube-dl is a small command-line program to download videos from YouTube.com and....

Open a terminal and navigate to the directory where you want to save the download. The syntax for a basic download is youtube-dl [URL]. The following will download "In My Life" from The Beatles' Rubber Soul album.

Code: Select all

youtube-dl https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBcdt6DsLQA

At this time, clipgrab appears to only be available as an appimage...once file is downloaded, you have to RIGHT click on it nd click "properties", then click the "permissions" tab and then click the box that says "Allow executing file as program"...DAMIEN

You need to update youtube-dl. Open a terminal and run the following command.

Code: Select all

pip install --upgrade youtube-dl
As for ClipGrap, you first need to make it executable. Right-click the icon and select Properties from the menu. Go to the Permissions tab and check the Allow executing file as program box.

I should have read a little more deeply into this here.

If im seeing this correctly, you are running a 32 bit version of LM 19.1 Cinnamon DE on a 64 bit PentiumD CPU.

ClipGrab to my knowledge is now only available in 64 bit versions.

You are going to experience more and more programs as 64 bit only because most developers are simply not dealing with 32 bit versions of anything any longer.

Ubuntu as well as LM are no longer offering 32 bit versions of its platforms as well beginning with LM 20.

My personal opinion to not be running into future roadblocks like this one discussed here is to back up everything you want to keep and do a new, Clean install of LM either 19.2 or go for LM 20 64 bit...But i wouldnt try using the Cinnamon distribution as it is heavy on an older system like yours.

You will get better performance from either "Mate" or "XFCE" versions...Just my 2 cents worth...DAMIEN
