Wine install and printers

Post by Skalman »

Hi Folks...
Problem to install Wine and to get the XP program giv accces to the printer.
Computer old Lenovo R60 Linux Mint 19.2 Mate 1.22 Kernel 4.15.99 CPU 64 bit but the program running under Wine is 32 bit.

There is somehow some "wine" already installed since an old XP program is running nice But I can not get access to the printer.
Neither can I do anything clicking on the Wine in the main meny.
So I would like to install the "latest" Wine" but the Synaptic has so many options so I can not understand it. And the Software Manager has an old one. Installing from https://www.winehq.org/ vers 5.0.3 didn't work. Failed, maybe my fault.

Install and futhermore I must give acces to the printer for program running under wine.
How to do all this?
Someone out there who can help with details, Im not so good to manage the sudo terminal and give text commands.
Not easy for an oldtimers 76 years fellow to learn all new things fast.
Thank You.

Oh..by the way,... almost forgot it... tried to run that program under the Virtuell Computer, functioning nice but NO printer.

It's most unlikely that you will get a printer running in Wine

The setup in Mint for wine is

Code: Select all

apt install wine-installer
Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon

That's a thing of the past.
Printing under Wine runs straight out of the box, I'm using IrfanView and Notepad++ for printing on a regular basis.

@Skalman: I'd strongly recommend you to install Wine from the winehq.org repositories.

Thank You mgruber
Did You know that the famous song "Holy-Night" was written by a Mr Gruber?

Well to my issue now. I made an upgrade and has now a new installed wine functioning.
Installed the XP program I need to run. The program, old version of Nero, with license, is okey.
It picked up the the printer Cannon TS8500 series.
Everything seems to be right, but no printing. nothing happens.
(I need that application for some old covers, not possible to redo in newer programs)

Shall I uninstall all wine things according to the advice at the
https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu
as you suggested? I'm afraid all my other data will lost such as other wine programs and the virtual C:/ as well? There is an other Vbox file to under the catalog .wine, for the Virtual Computer program. What happens with that if I uninstall?
Or just uninstall via the Software Manager and click Wine there?
Hoping you got an answer and thank You.
