I use their PPA - it will upgrade your current install and it's worked flawlessly for me.

Same here, though different PPA, and it's been working very well for a few years.

I'm not on my Linux machine at the moment so can not remember the actual PPA address but search for "Libreoffice fresh ppa" and you will find it easily I think.

the way that I've done an upgrade, in the past,
was to download some huge *.tarball & extract all the *.deb files,
and then run an Gdebi command, to Install them all.

nowadays, it's add an simple PPA to to the Repository & it's done.

If you use the PPA you do not need to uninstall It will just upgrade the packages needed. If you download the Large file from the Libre Office site you should uninstall the current version.(Note: it is not technically necessary to uninstall first but I've found that if you don't you end up with files left that are not needed for the newer version.) If you use the flatpak/snaps It's your choice I haven't tried it but I would assume you may end up with both versions.

The other choice is if you really don't need newer version for specific needs they just wait until it's upgrade in the official repositories. It will be patched for security and bug fixes.

Good Luck on your choice.

IF you download the .tar file and open it there are two folders, open the readme file and go to the "Installation of LibreOffice on Debian/Ubuntu-based Linux systems" section. Follow the instruction, it will install 7.1.0 without any pain.
You will have to uninstall the old version after you get 7.1.x installed so as to not have a conflict.

Ditto. I've just successfully upgraded from the default version of LibreOffice to a more up to date one without uninstalling or using the deb package.
Method (for dummies!) -
1) Add ppa using the terminal.
2) Open update manager, hit Refresh and install the upgrade.
The ppa is

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-still
This updated to 7.0.6.2 which is the second one they are offering on the LibreOffice for Linux dowload page. "This version is slightly older and does not have the latest features, but it has been tested for longer."

Then for what they call LibreOffice fresh, the ppa is

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa
This updated to 7.1.4.2 which is the first one they are offering on the LibreOffice for Linux dowload page. "If you're a technology enthusiast, early adopter or power user, this version is for you!"

Notes: The development version is 7.2 and my Windows 10 install has 7.1.3. Current versions are 7.0.6 (still), 7.1.3, and 7.1.4 (fresh).
