My LM 20 didn't last more than 2 months

Post by Menard »

Hi

Fatal error

I just wanted to uninstall a package from the repositories  and dpkg is now dead !!! I can use neither Synaptic, neither anything to install software
and more than this, when i want to exit Mint it doesn't want, it tells me "Do you really want to close ?" But I cant' tell "YES of course, dumbass" because it is acting like Google  it proposes a choice in which you have no choice in real , dirty shit !

So because I uninstalled Bind9 and then I wanted to uninstall Snort (packages from Mint) and if I follow the instruction to fix dpkg it opens a snort command windows and then it turns in loop  I ve very very tired of this, I am a doctor in medecine, I want to be a doctor not a Linux maintainer :|

Compare with my Linux Mint 18 that lasted 3 years with follwing upgrades til 19.3

So thanks to God I can restore Timeshift or Clonezilla, I have both... but ...

All this because I tried a VPN that never wanted to connect to the network from a standard user account without using the sudo login

And Mint has even not an uptodate tutorial for basic VPN issues

you should use the "Mark for Removal" option, in Package Manager aka synaptic,
and that method should work, very well.
:)

Don't use the "Completely Remove" option, though,
as that will remove the package-name from the Repository List, as well.

Synaptic doesn't start, it shows an error message : E: dpkg a été interrompu. Il est nécessaire d'utiliser « dpkg --configure -a » pour corriger le problème.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

And when I type this in a terminal with sudo I get that the problem is with Snort and ther no solution with that, it is only a snort terminal and it turns in loop

you can try again, by an redo of the Repository List thus:
- click on the Update Manger in the Taskbar.
- Edit - Software Sources
then, on the Official Repositories Tab .. at the Bottom of that Tab
- click on 'Restore the default settings'.
then re-Apply the Mirror settings, to re-establish the synchronization of that Repository List.

I believe you and I appreciate you enlightening me about this.
But I will point out that it is not obvious from the Help file that Complete Removal will remove the app from the repositories:

So because I uninstalled Bind9
I've seen a couple mentions of bind9 now. The update manager says the bind9 utility is deprecated (use dig or delv from the dnsutils package), but it offers an update for bind9 to me. I suspect it is safe to install, but I welcome any comments. If it is deprecated, maybe it should be uninstalled?? I guess the gist of this topic here say don't uninstall it.

After at least 3 years you expect that?

I use "Complete Removal" in synaptic all the time and have never noticed anything like that (if I understand what you're saying).

The difference between remove conky and completely removing it is that the files:

Code: Select all

/etc/conky/conky.conf
/etc/conky/conky_no_x11.conf
remain after a "remove" but are deleted by a "complete remove".

The completely removed conky package definitely remains in the repo list.

Yeah - - the "Mark for Removal" option does seem to leave some 'traces' behind, for some reason,
but that "Completely Remove" option, will Remove the program, from the Repository List,
which means, that you will have to add-in that program, via an PPA, for example,
before it can actually be re-installed again.
