[ Solved ] Warpinator non functional

Post by jbh911 »

I'm running LM 20.1 Mate and had Warpinator functional 2 days ago.
This morning it's baulking at this end, Unit A with the following message:
`Warbinator startup unsuccessful, please check your logs`
Which prompts the Q, which logs and where? :P
The remote unit (B) is also LM 20.1 Mate and both set to automatically start -- and the firewalls on each are OFF.
A reboot on both units A & B result in A not auto starting. Manually started and message: `No other computers found`
The unit B is up and waiting for this unit (A) to connect!
Have removed, rebooted and reinstalled Warpinator -- with the same results.
Both units are connected by Eth and this post is from A, the problem child.
A was LM 20 clean install upgraded to LM 20.1
B was a recent clean install to LM 20.1
Is a clean install of LM 20.1 to A or restoring recent Snapshots worth a go to solve this problem?
Any suggestions to help sort this problem would be appreciated. :D  :(

I'd say restoring recent snapshots is a great idea if it worked before. First start Update Manager - View - History of updates to see what was recently updated.

I'm not sure about the logs but you can try this:

Code: Select all

zgrep 'warp' /var/log/apt/h*

No need for log as Warpinator starting OK.
The Restore on B failed to boot! Fresh install of LM 20.1. Checked Warpinator prior to updates (1.1.1) it can't find other computers. Updated LM 20.1, Warpinator now 1.1.2 - same result: it can't find other computers. Computer A can see B - and waiting for two way connection. Most frustrating as I got use to using the it.
What the hell can it be? BIOS? It's a ASUS N61J series laptop, a few years old with a recently installed SSD drive. SSD settings?

The Restore on B failed to boot!
Sorry, I don't know. I am waiting for others to comment.
So you Timeshifted back on B, but not on A. The B Timeshift made it so B would not startup at all??
Maybe you should elaborate on the quoted part above. When B would not startup you did what?

A ping from A showed packet 100% lost. Ping from B OK
Turned Firewall ON on both units and in turn used:
$ sudo ufw status
showed "active"
S sudo sudo ufw status numbered
showed nothing - ie no rules
Opened Warpinator and selected "Updated firewall rules" via Warpinator Preferences followed by:
$ sudo ufw status numbered and showed:
Status: active

To Action From
-- ------ ----
42000 ALLOW Anywhere # WARPINATOR
42000 (v6) ALLOW Anywhere (v6) # WARPINATOR

Back in business, now I can rebuild my laptop! :D

Warpinator worked fine late yesterday!
This morning, no go. B "waiting for two-connection"!
ping remote (A) result: 3 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 2054ms
Both Firewalls OFF same results.
What the .. How do I fine the cause?

It is interesting that few experts on this forum comment on Warpinator.
Search this forum for Warpinator and you will find posts like this:
viewtopic.php?f=47&t=342721
See if any of those help you.
Also, I suggest you change the subject for all your posts from Warbinator to Warpinator. I have changed mine.

HI mikeflan thanks for the heads up on the name, appreciate that.
Disabling the Firewalls on both laptops and rebooting got Webpinator bask into play.
So, more home work needed to sort out this issue. :)

If these laptops are on a home (or otherwise trusted) network operating behind a properly configured router, you may want to reconsider if the firewalls are worth your trouble. :)

I like your thinking, but I'd like to get the firewall /warpinator functional. A challenge! :D

Hi all, just a thought, Are the ethernet connections working correctly on the laptops, along with the ethernet cables ?. May have a bad cable ? or an ethernet port going down. Can you still connect to the web when the problem occurs ?. Try swopping the connections over at your router to see if its a bad port there or just on one of the laptops , also try different cables if possible. Hope this helps.

Thanks Madmogone. Did as suggested, checked all eth connectors and swapped cables, didn't appear to Odd event yesterday, had been transferring data via Warpinator successfully then some time late Warpinator was not communicating. Re-booting both laptops restored Warpinator. Now wondering if the issue is a laptop hardware problem! Time will tell.
