Kernel deletion SOLVED

Post by Bullfinch1 »

Hello - I am unable to highlight obsolete kernels and delete.
However, I have updated the manager to Automation and enabled Automatic Maintenance.
Am I correct to think the next time, within seven days, the manager works it will delete the kernels?

Hello,
Why is that? What exactly happens when you try?

Thank you.
I go to remove Kernels. Screen comes up 'Remove Kernels'
A list comes up of, I guess, discontinued Kernels - I push 'Apply'
I put in my authority as requested and then we are back to
a screen saying An error occurred 'dpkg--configure-a' and also
-cache->open() failed please report.

An error occurred 'dpkg--configure-a'
That is an unexpected error message. We are more used to seeing:
dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
Anyway, I suggest you run dpkg--configure-a in a terminal. Tell us if there is any response.
Then try to delete the kernels again.

It appears on my system I have some 4.15 and 5.4 installed, but I should remove 4.18, 5.0, and 5.3. I guess I will do that for the first time ever.

Thank you for your help mikeflan. I kept at it and was able, eventually, to download the new updated Kernel 5.4.0-72.
The archive list of kernels are now shown as superseded/end of life.
I had used the terminal before but aborted the process as it was taking so long; I didn't recognise the slight
difference in the code being generated for each obsolete kernel. I guess patience is a virtue I don't possess.
I also learnt that without sudo you need 'Superuser privilege'! All the best
