Google drive - strange behavior in Nemo

Post by CarrotCake »

Hi all,

I have been running Mint 20.1 now for a few months and all is well. So I'm not around here very often as it 'just works'.

But now, I've come across a strange thing in Google Drive, so I hope you have an idea on how to solve it.

I use the Online Accounts option to mount my Google Drive.
Generally, that works fine.
However it has two quirks.
  1. when I open a document on my Google Drive, let's say a .doc or .xls (in my home, people are using MS products as well) in LibreOffice, the filename that is displayed in the title bar is some hash of randomly generated letters. I would assume it is like a temporary file name. When I save, the correct document is saved.
However, if I would open the document through the 'recent documents' option in e.g. Calc, the filename is not found.
Is there a way to overcome that?
  2. When I create a new document in again LibreOffice, assume Calc, and I try to save the file as .xls or .xlsx on Google Drive again, that is not successful. The file generated cannot be opened by Excel (that my wife uses). However, if I save the file equally on my local harddrive and then move it to Google Drive using Nemo, it does work - so LibreOffice is able to save a compatible format, just not remotely.
Opening an existing .xls(x) and saving it on the Google Drive does work, it only fails for new documents.
Any ideas?

I'll try it for you if you'd like, but I only edit files already on my Google Drive or upload files to the site. How do you "save the file as .xls or .xlsx on Google Drive"? Do you do that from Calc? File - Save As - then what?

Yeah, directly from Calc, then I select Save As and use .xls or .xlsx as file type.

Great if you can try -- do you also see a random file name in the title bar of Calc or Writer etc., if you open up a file directly from Google Drive?

Yeah, directly from Calc, then I select Save As and use .xls or .xlsx as file type.
If you do that you are creating the file on your system, not on GSuite.
You should instead select from within GSuite: New - Google Sheets
Then when finished you just close the tab and return to the GSuite home page.
Notice that there is no 'Save-As' or 'Close' in the File menu:

I can't see the document but that's OK, I assume it's equal.

I understand what you mean (I think, at least :)) but I don't get why.
Why can't I save a new file directly on Drive?

Probably because the Libre people don't want to work with (or fight with) Google for all eternity to keep that function operating. I don't blame them.
