Web Video Playback Issue?

Post by ytene »

In the last week or so [sorry I cannot be more precise than that] I have noticed that video playback on one web site (https://www.msnbc.com/) has stopped working.

Digging in to this, I see that on April 20th, my desktop upgraded my Firefox browser from 87.0 to 88.0... I have the following Plug-Ins active on Firefox:-

AdBlock Plus
AdBlocker for YouTube
Basic Gestures
CookieBro
Floccus Bookmarks Sync
Ghostery - Privacy AdBlocker
NoScript
Privacy Badger

I also use a local instance of Pi-Hole (https://pi-hole.net/) a DNS sink, to act as my local network DNS and local DNS cache.

When I go through test permutations, I see that eliminating PiHole re-enables playback. When I check the "blocked Domains" log from PiHole, I see that domains:-

assets.adobetm.com
snappytvpoc-vh.akamaihd.net

are both being automatically blocked by PiHole. If I over-ride my use of the local PiHole instance and just use the Google DNS (8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4) then I get working playback again, so in one sense it looks as though this is a PiHole issue. On the other hand, the problem seems to have surfaced at the same time that I upgraded from Firefox 87 to Firefox 88.

I'd be interested and very grateful if anyone can either confirm my suspicions that the problem is most likely caused by the addition of one of the above 2 domains in the PiHole "blacklist" in the recent past, or suggest that perhaps it might be something related to my choice of browser.

Thank you in advance

I am betting those being blocked are on a block list that is on your pi-hole. You can whitelist them and it's easy to remove them from the whitelist if they don't solve your problem. Seems to be solved here as well. https://discourse.pi-hole.net/t/configu ... back/46715
