VLC for Victorian (Australia) TV station

Post by ozzyrod »

(SOLVED)
Hi all,
I am attempting to watch TV channels in Victoria Australia on VLC on my desktop PC. originally I followed this link
https://davidzou.com/articles/streaming ... t-with-vlc
I then have followed the instructions on this following link;
https://davidzou.com/articles/streaming ... t-with-vlc
however when I reach step 5 nothing occurs. I have connected my PC to modem (TP Link AC1200) via an ethernet cable but still no go?
The next step reads
If no channels appear appear after 5 minutes, ensure that your firewall or security software(e.g anti-virus...) is configured to allow VLC to access the network
however I am stuck when it comes to that?
I did see this link to try and figure what frequency to input but that is a bit beyond my skill set as to what to select
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Televisio ... #Australia
any ideas suggestions would be greatly accepted
Cheers from down under
Rod

Which USB TV stick/pci tv tuner card are you using? IS it connected to a good antenna?

Those instruction are for taking the output from a tv tuner in your computer from free-to-air transmissions and "broadcasting" them to other computers on your local network.

Also, although the instructions say you can leave the bandwidth on automatic in VLC, I've found I've always had to explicitly change it to 7MHz for Australia. And remember the tuning frequency is in kHz, so eg ABC here is 191500kHz

Digital TV frequencies have changed a lot since those instructions were written (they're from before the great restacking, when analogue TV was still being broadcast).

Thanks for your reply.

So I have simply plugged my desktop to modem via Ethernet cable. I definitely am not using a USB stick. Do not know if I have a pci tuner card in PC, I suspect not. I am a little confused as to antenna question. Are you saying I need to connect (wirelessly?) to an antenna or physically?

Given my number of questions it would appear I am out of my depth. I was only going down this path due to being in Regional Melbourne (Geelong, which has reception issues anyway) and wanted to watch TV from PC (27 inch) in my bedroom, due to rabbit ears antenna not working, so its not sounding good. at best I can watch via Freeview TV app on tablet. I would have thought I could use that app on my PC, but apparently not

Those instructions are for a tv tuner connected to your computer (either usb or pci). My antenna question was because the system won't "tune" if you don't a have a good antenna, it will just sit there doing nothing.

If you just want to watch tv via the internet (ie streaming) then going to the tv station's web page will show links to their streams. eg TEN's live stream is https://10play.com.au/live. You may have to set up a login/password so they can track you (ABC, SBS).

Just watch out, if you are on a limited download plan, this will chew up your monthly amount pretty quickly, at 700MB/hour.

Those instructions are for a DVB-T tuner .. usb stick .. connected to your computer's usb port.
- - not for any pci based Tuner card, as such.
https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_fro ... r&_sacat=0
that type of usb gadget . .

they are also really popular, with folks that also wish to "listen in" on various radio services,
- - emergency services ,, airports tower traffic - - that sort of thing.
