re-install of Libre Office writer and Calc failed

Post by jolexin »

I have no idea why Libre Office Writer and Calc are extremely slow recently. Opening a file may take 10 minutes or more and in the meantime my system is dead. I have a friend, who has got the same versions of Linux Mint and Libre Office on his PC. He can open those files within seconds on his PC. Therefore I decided to uninstall Witer and Calc on my PC and reinstall them.

I opened Systemverwaltung / Anwendungsverwaltung (engl. Application Administration?), removed Witer and Calc, rebooted my PC, opened Anwendungsverwaltung again and clicked "install". I got unexpected error messages, which indicate a dependency problem. I do not understand the meaning of the message, therefore I need advice what to do.

"The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libreoffice-writer:Depends libreoffice-base-core (=1:6.4.7-Oubuntu0.20.04.1) but 1:6.4.7-Oubuntu0.20.04.1 is to be installed.
"

It sounds like you have a more fundamental problem to start with.
Can you go to the following link in follow number 5 (well, follow all of it but especially that one).
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=83444

How long ago did you install the system? If it was recently, I'd be tempted to start from scratch and reinstall.
Not saying that your present system can't be fixed to install LibreOffice, its just that even if it is straightforward, it sounds like there are other issues with the installation.

As gittiest personITW says I think that you need to supply some more data.

I don't think that it is a good idea to remove components of Libre Office. I think it would have been be more sensible to remove the complete package.

You could add the latest Libre Office as an Applmage from here:

At that site what does "Download Still" mean?

LibreOffice Fresh is the stable version with the most recent features. ... LibreOffice Still is the stable version that has undergone more testing (over a longer time). It is usually recommended for more conservative use. For more details on the latest release changes, see the release notes.

gittiest personITW asks for more details. I am aware that details are necessary, only in my case, which looks like a severe performance problem, I had no idea, which further data might help. Well, I will furnish whatever seems promising to uncover the problem.

On my PC I have got Linux Mint 20 MATE 64bit, which I installed in Dec. 2020 or so.
gittiest personITW suspects:
...it sounds like there are other issues with the installation.
I also feel that there might be an other issue, however, how can I find out, which one? Below is the System data from "inxi". Which additional data should I collect? Should I continue to analyse the problem? Or try to re-install Libre Office in total?

Ok,
Looking at your specs - you should be running Xfce.
Cinnamon is the most needy flavour of Mint in terms of resources.
Mate is quite efficient.
However, for your sytem which is a little older, XFCE should run better.
It will be worth your while to install that rather than carrying on with Cinnamon.

I know you want to fix your present system but it will always be slow (it shouldn't be as slow as 10 minutes to open a file though).
It will probably take less time for you to do that (remember to backup to a thumb drive first) than to slog through trying to fix your problem, most likely succeeding but possibly not and you'd still have a sluggish system.

Is the slow down only in LibreOffice? If not, it could be the disk failing, the disk full, memory full, an OS problem. This is the main reason why you should perform some diagnostics on the slow down before attempting a reinstall of anything.

The dmesg command can show error messages during or immediately after a slowdown. The Disks program can show disk errors in the SMART data. The system monitor can show memory usage, paging, and resource hogging processes.

If Cinnamon was working then something changed, the switch to Xfce may hide whatever error caused the problem. You can make Cinnamon faster by switching off effects but finding the cause of the slow down is more important than trying random reinstalls.

Same problem here. Same document was opening like the lightning just a week ago and it takes forever to open and near impossible to edit now. Of course, I am talking multiple documents and nothing fancy: job applications and such. Most versatile thing in there are different fonts for different sections (max. 3), so the complexity is out as a possible cause.

Was there any recent "update" to the Libre Office?

Postedit:
2 virtually same documents: CV1 (original) and CV2 (edited original) are opening in completely different manner. CV1 opens immediately and can be edited normally and CV2 is a "slug" and impossible to edit or use. This is just an example - it happens to various documents. And - no, I haven't changed anything significant. :|
