Steam installer
Hi
I used to use steam games a lot until one day it crashed my PC and I had to reinstall everything. Now I can't install steam again. It won't work how ever many times I try. Steam are no help they just say it is up to Linux Mint to fix this issue.

Re: Steam installer
Plenty of LM users use Steam, but I don't.
Type this in a terminal:
Post the output in "Code" tags. The button that inserts these tags is marked </>
Type this in a terminal:
Code: Select all
inxi -Fxxxrz
Re: Steam installer
"It won't work" is too little information. Can say that Steam as installed from (through...) the repositories works well out of the box on 20.1 for me. I.e.,
and start it to "really" install it directly from Valve. What does not work for you?
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install steam

Re: Steam installer
The steam launcher always comes up with the error message "Package operation failed". I have tried downloading it from the software manager with the same results. It's very frustrating I have feeling it's some thing steam needs to fix but they don't seem to care. I don't how using terminal can fix this error. Thanks for the reply

It can be applicable to helping you fix the problem because there are a decent chunk of Linux veterans here who have great troubleshooting skills using the terminal to get far more info much fasterI don't how using terminal can fix this error.
So post the results of that command without quotes " inxi -Fxxxrz " after left clicking on that </> button ( 5th from the left just above the message window) so they can know how to begin. Sometimes it's a hardware issue or involve drivers or other things..and sometimes it's only a software or nuking-packages issue.
They wont' know until you post more detail info.
It's no different than going to a doctor and telling the doc " doc...I'm hurting..help me" and you're not holding any particular part of your body. Then the doc must ask questions like " well how are you hurting? Where are you hurting? Is it a dull pain, or is it a sharp stabbing pain? How often has it happened and under what situations...waking you up out of sleep? Or does it only happen when you bend a certain way, or eating certain foods?"
Details matter man.
p.s. Steam in linux works flawlessly for me
Here's my inxi -Fxxxrz

Re: Steam installer
So you reinstalled the operating system at that point?I used to use steam games a lot until one day it crashed my PC and I had to reinstall everything.
If so, what version of LM were you using when Steam crashed your PC?
You might want to try this:
Shutdown Steam. Make a backup copy of the
/home/glen/.steam/
directory. Then remove that directory:
Code: Select all
rm -rf ~/.steam

Re: Steam installer
Thanks, but I have been told that Steam no longer supports Linux Mint. Which I find annoying having paid good money to get X plane installed on my PC. I guess I need to get another version of Linux. And do a dual boot as I still like Linux mint.
Re: Steam installer
It's not a matter of "no more": Steam has never supported, in a technical-support sense, anything other than Ubuntu. Mint is on the lower levels almost the same thing though and any problem you are having will not be due to specifically it: it's just that Valve's support won't even touch anything that is not Ubuntu (and, probably, not anything that is in a more than token sense still, but anyways). If you aim to investigate things note what mikeflan said.
