Cinnamon completely freezes when playing videos in browser [SOLVED]

Post by davit »

Hello everyone,

My laptop freezes periodically when I have some video turned on in the browser (whether it's youtube, or some other website. Haven't tested it much on desktop players like mplayer/vlc.). The only remedy is to turn off the laptop by pressing the shutdown button for a while.

After researching similar issues, I came across with a solution which suggested to remove tumbler package. It wasn't installed on the system, but when I opened the crush report, it showed an error related to xplayer-thumbnailer. I removed that package and for a while the Mint wasn't freezing at all. But it started again since then and there's nothing in the crush report.

System info: Linux Mint 20.1 Cinnamon
Cinnamon version: 4.8.6
Kernel: 5.4.0-72-generic

As for the drivers, I am using nouveau opensource driver, because it works really smoothly, laptop is silent and system is blazing fast. If I switch to the (recommended) nvidia-driver-460, it makes the system clunky, the cooler is going crazy and laptop is heating up rather badly.

Welcome to the forum, davit.

With that new of a cpu, I recommend you try the 5.8 kernel which is available in Update Manager. It has been known to help with freeze issues.

Open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Make sure 5.8 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear. Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

I would also recommend checking to make sure you have the latest BIOS/UEFI.

I agree that updating the kernel to 5.8 might help this. Also, the sound manager 'pulseaudio' has given some folks (me) fits while viewing videos via web browsers. It is not updated as often as it should by the project devs at redhat so there are outstanding bugs. If it is not too frozen, open a terminal and type

Code: Select all

pulseaudio -k
and hit enter to restart the daemon.
comadore, pcDOS, hpux, solaris, vms-vax ....blah blah blah..
Yet I'm still a fn nooob

Thanks you.

I will post a comment after it's fixed and will mention which solution helped. And will mark as [SOLVED] obviously.

I have just seen this so gave it a try, everything is so much quicker I was getting freeze ups every day . 5.8 kernel is working well even on this old Lenovo Think centre.

Your issue is more likely related to the very small size of your Mint install. Because it is so small, your root partition is quite full which can definitely cause performance issues. It does not appear you have anything else on that drive, so I'm not sure why it is so small. However, that is not the topic for this thread. I suggest you create a new thread should you want to get further advice on your install.

I can confirm, upgrading Kernel to 5.8.0 helped the issue. It hasn't frozen once since then, nor has it had even minor glitches.
