[solved] Android warpinator uses bluetooth (no it doesn't)

Post by AndyMH »

Suspected it might. One of my thinkpad T430's does not have bluetooth (the others do). T430 (with bluetooth) to/from T430 (no bluetooth) no problems with warpinator - it's using the LAN. T430 (with bluetooth) to phone - no problems with warpinator. T430 without bluetooth could not see the phone but, oddly, the phone could see the T430.

Got a cheap bluetooth dongle for the deficient T430 - no problems transferring files to/from the phone with warpinator.

FWIW - this works OOTB, plugged it in, blueman came up in the panel and it just works:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07 ... UTF8&psc=1
about the same price as getting the bluetooth module for a T430, but that means taking the laptop apart.

To/from your phone?

Exactly.

Edit: I just reconfirmed with version 1.2.1 on the phone (bluetooth off) and 1.1.2 on an approximately 10 year old HP laptop without any bluetooth hardware whatsoever. Both devices identified by their internal IPs.

Test: On your laptop where it works without the dongle, switch off the bluetooth hardware, and do the same on the phone. Still works?

T431 Bluetooth turned off, wifi 192.168.0.144
T432 Bluetooth on, wired 192.168.0.40
Phone Bluetooth off, wifi 192.168.0.118

What T431 sees:
Screenshot from 2021-06-08 16-08-33.png
no bluetooth connection on either PC or phone = cannot tx files.

What T432 sees:
Screenshot from 2021-06-08 16-11-28.png
bluetooth on, can see both T431 and phone and tx files.

I'd post a screenshot of the phone if I knew how!
The phone can see T432 (bluetooth on) even though bluetooth is turned off on the phone and can tx files??? Cannot see T431 (bluetooth off).

Turn on bluetooth on T431 and it can be seen by the phone and can tx files.

Confused :?

Confusing indeed. :?

I just tested with my phone and a Dell laptop with bluetooth hardware. All four combinations of on/off for bluetooth between them demonstrated the same behavior, where it works.

Conversely, with the phone and laptop connected via bluetooth, if I disable wireless on either device, it fails.

Even more confused, found out how and sent a screenshot of the phone to T432. Bluetooth on the T432 and on the phone was switched off at the time???

I'd shutdown T431.

Just wanted to note that Warpinator for Android was updated to 1.2.2 recently, if you wanted to give that a go.

My Android to PC use is through a modem/router at home - the PC is connected by ethernet cable, not wifi. Bluetooth connection came up in another thread, so I turned off phone wifi and activated bluetooth, Warpinator failed and alerted with a pop-up that there was no wifi / LAN connection. Rechecking the post it appears the bluetooth worked on the poster's Mint laptop, not the Android device.

Best guess: it may be some home LAN connections support data over bluetooth for the PC and that would be no problem for the Android device going through the same modem, assuming its own wifi is connected. I'm open to learning different.
TRUST BUT VERIFY any advice from anybody, including me. Mint/Ubuntu user since 10.04 LTS. LM20 64 bit XFCE (Dell 1520). Dual boot LM20 XFCE / Win7 (Lenovo desktop and Acer netbook). Testing LM21.1 Cinnamon and XFCE Live for new Lenovo desktop.

I confirmed with the developer that warpinator for android does not use bluetooth. I now have it working on the T430 that was giving problems, why it started working I've no idea.

This is an interesting thread. It would seem logical that somewhere in their docs that Warpinator would explicitly state what protocol it uses to connect. On my network, I have bluetooth disabled on all devices, PC is ethernet-only, and Warpinator works as advertised. The only reason I need my phone on WiFi is for being on the same LAN as my PC.
