LM 20.1 cannot play youtube videos, neither in Firefox, nor in Chrome

I am new to mint and to linux . I am not an IT guy so please be patient with me.

my issue is that i cannot play YouTube videos on my pc be it with firefox or with chrome ( I would prefer remaining on chrome) (because all my other pcs have chrome and therefore sync is simpler)

When I go to youtube and select a video I get a revolving circle and nothing happens

I have a 30bg internet connection with a jitter of 2

Did you check the checkbox to install multimedia codecs when you installed Mint?
Do you have the package "mint-meta-codecs" installed? You can verify this in Synaptic (Start Menu -> Administration). If not, install it, and also agree to installing whatever else Synaptic wants to install then.

I did check the, during the installation of mint, the multi media box.and i re installed the meta codecs to no avail.


I tried to look for any settings for my video scree however i did not see anything that could change the behavior

while launching a video on youtube i still get the the buffering wheel. and if i leave it there for a few minutes things do not change.

I even tried to install adobe flash player to with no improvement to my situation. I also tried to reboot the after each install

Please uninstall the Flash Player. This software is full of security holes, and it does not get any updates anymore.

The most recent Adobe Flash Player plugin even has got a "kill switch", which prevents it from loading and doing anything after 31-Dec-2020, the day when Adobe Flash officially died.

I uninstalled flash player.

Launched chrome, went to youtube tried to play a video to no avail

i loaded a video from my NAS and tried to play it in celluloid no video is displayed. If i move the courser along the video i do see images but the video will not play. I tried to play MKV and MP4 videos same difference.

i also tried to load kodi. it opens the file and displays the fixed image of the video. i also tried to run hypnotix to watch tv. again the video is fixed and does not progress.

Is there something else i should configure

as you can see from my build sheet here above my pc has an intel 3rd generation graphic controller

Well seems to me everyone else, so far, has covered what would be the more obvious or direct possibly resolutions. How about these:

1. Plug that power cord in. Install "Cpupower-gui" from the Software Manager and set that profile to Performance. Now try playing those videos.

2. Do a time shift or whatever backup, and then update the Kernel to 5.8 via the Update Manager, reboot, and try playing those same videos. I've read all over that that particular Kernel version has solved many types of problems.

That sounds like you're connecting to the internet while using your phone as a wifi hot spot. IF yes, is that the only way you can connect to the internet..practically? I've heard of some even with high end phones ( samsung note 9 for example) still experiencing packet stuttering problems and random ping spikes ( which can cause a video on youtube not to play or if it does play....visually and audio wise stutters)

3. Perhaps try a local coffee shop or almost any fast food restaurant that has free wifi after you buy a cup of coffee or burger.

4. I also wonder if your network settings in your LM cinnamon laptop are set to " metered". To check this and enable or disable that, open cinnamon menu...then search for "Advanced Network Configuration" without quotes. Next, highlight your connection ( it will have a goofy looking name), and left click on that cog below...
Finally select the General tab/button on the far left near the top.. Metered connection will be at the bottom. If it's set to Yes, change it to no for now

Please try one of these numbered things at a time and let us know the result.

I say one of these at a time as to possibly rule out the culprit if it's just one culprit causing this problem which makes it easier to make a note of for future reference. But..you may end up having to do any combination of many of these or even all of these to resolve this problem. *shrugs*

I noticed Karlchen already chimed in. I'm hoping SMG or more experienced veterans here will also. Perhaps there's something I missed.

It was not my phone causing the interference.

It was caused by a PSU of one of my laptops.

there must be something wrong either with my set up or the latest mint 20.2

since i installed it I have the problems mention in my prior post. This monday morning all worked fine. Why i do not know. I managed to play videos from youtube using chrome and firefox no issues. since last night The issues of playing youtube videos is back

the primary function of this pc is to run Home assistant. I use the youtube videos to further learn and develop HA. I use these videos on this machine to enable me to copy and paste Instruction in the terminal window.

I can use another pc to do this how eve I find typing the command lines for me is too complicated (I'm dyslexic)) Example I was trying to automate the mounting of my nas devise but after 2 hours of typing and correcting my script \It still do not work because of my errors.

Please assist me in getting youtube videos to play (preferably in chrome)

These virtual ethernet interfaces are not what a standard Linux Mint installation looks like, so that was installed afterwards. I'd try to boot Linux Mint 20.2 Uma as ISO from USB stick (https://linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=288). If that fails, try the Edge ISO (https://linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=291).

Don't install from USB stick, just use this as test session to open Firefox and go to Youtube.

I am truly sorry however i do not understand your message

I installed LM 20.1 via the USB. this is correct and it worked fine (minus my screw ups).

I received an up[date notice to upgrade to 20.2 about 2 weeks ago. All was going well to the point I was considering moving all my pc to Linux mint last weekend. (i am really starting to hate MS). So i decided to try to automate the mounting of my freenas files. As i went to chrome and the youtube I realiszed that the video was not playing

No. I suggested that you boot from USB stick, but do NOT install. Just use the USB stick session for testing Youtube. The idea is that booting the downloaded ISO from USB stick gives a clean system state for testing, but does not touch your actual installation - so you don't have to revert anything after that.

I don't know - I did not expect this to fix anything. I'm also not sure whether it will stay working now.

I just wanted to see whether Youtube works while you are running Mint from USB stick.
