Chrome is using over 125% of CPU (SecurePayment on htop)

Post by Linuxien »

Hi,

First of all, i'm new to Linux, so there may be plenty of things that i do not understand.

Here is my problem : I'm using chrome, and one day i made an update, and since that day, i can see my CPU Temperature spiking to 95°C almost every time that I have several chrome tabs opened at the same time (starting from 2 tabs, or 26 tabs).

Here is what i could copy from the htop :

Code: Select all

opt/google/chrome/chrome --type=renderer --field-trial-handle=2833051880290656179,11710549170800856180,131072 --lang=fr \
    --extension-process ---origin-trial-disabled-features=securepaymentconfirmation --num-raster-threads=4 --enable-main-frame-before-activation \
    --renderer-client-id=342 --no-v8-untrusted-code-mitigations --shared-files=v8_context_snapshot_data:100
I never had this issue before I made one update from the update center (unfortunately i do not remember the date of this update and i'm affraid to do a timeshift : At first i didn't care too much, then I had my job and the vagaries of life made me wait few months before posting this message).

Here is my config :

Can someone help me or guide me on how could I handle this problem ?

(My main reason for migrating from W10 to mint was the temperature of my processor that was very often very high on windows (even at idle) and very low on Linux (even at full usage).

Karl will be back.

Are you willing to try Chromium? I'm not sure it will make a difference, but you might like Chromium better in the long run. Chromium has better privacy.

I see you don't use Timeshift. Bad boy

I suspect if you open very simple web pages, then perhaps the problem would not occur. But, of course, that is not a solution. Maybe your problem has to do with javascript, or something like that.

I know I am not much help, but this gets bumped. And I will research some more later.

Thanx a lot, n oworries any help is very welcome and actually i never even thought of using chromium as I never really understood the purpose of it.

I'll make some research to see if it offers the same benefits as chrome (I have everything sync with chrome + I use Gsuite)

I configured Timeshift, but as i didn't Noticed fast enough the specific moment when those spikes happened, I prefered avoiding doing any restoration (I'm too affraid it will create many holes and many incompatibilities with some files I added to my PC :P )

If you find anything, i'll be really happy !

in the meantime i'll try to contact the emails i Have about the 'what seems to be' creators of SecurePayment process in GChrome

Thanx a lot !

Chrome and Chromium are very similar. Chromium is cloned from Chrome. Chromium will not interfere with Chrome, so feel free to install it (with Software Manager) and leave Chrome there also. No problem with that. Give Chromium a try and tell us how it goes.

Also, don't be afraid to Timeshift backwards. It is kinda scary when you do it, but you need to get used to doing it. It has never failed for me, though it doesn't always fix the problem.

Hi Mikeflan !

So i tried using chromium, and unfortunately, the synchronisation between Google and Chromium has been stopped since 15 march 2021... (How unlucky i was on this  )

So unfortunately i'll pass on chromium (despite it beeing a potentially very good alternative :( )

I didn't tried Timeshift yet because I didn't really understood what can be lost doing that (now for it to be effective i think i'll have to timeshift from day 1, so i've made a lot of things from that day so I don't know what can be lost but i'll try to figure it out and test).

I tried to contact the team behind this process at chromium (available here https://www.chromestatus.com/feature/5702310124584960) but they told me that this wasn't a problem big enough to spend time on it (I think this is what I understood).

I'll try to keep this post updated because from my Google Search, i've seen several person having the same issue.

Anyway, thanx for your help and i'll keep you updated !

You are correct to be cautious with Timeshift. It will restore your computer to an earlier time period and get rid of system level changes you have made. The exception to this is the program settings located in /home/. Those will typically not be restored to an earlier time period, which is a good thing. Keep in mind that you can shift back in time, and then if you don't like the results you can shift forward again.
