SOLVED - Second HDD issue

Post by AndyHCMC »

Hi,
I have a NVme drive with Linux Mint plus a SATA drive which i can access in file viewer by clicking on other devices or by clicking on Computer on desktop, in some programs a folder tree shows other devices and i can browse files and use/save etc.
My problem is in some programs I only get access to my files in the Nvme system drive and no access to the other drive?

Any ideas?

"some programs" is undefined. It has no meaning to anyone except yourself. You need to provide details.

I don't have the Openshot video editor currently installed to test.
I assume that openshot doesn't see it as "other devices" or "other locations" but rather reaches your HD volumes via its "mount point".

I recognize that some "File Managers" are confusing in their respective interfaces. The name "Computer" is an example of this.

Notice in the figure how different File Managers arrive at the same place by different paths. One by the direct shortcut to the volume, the other by the "mount point".

Different programs might use different GUI technologies like GTK, Qt, etc. They all have different file dialogues. If it's a Qt app, you'll have to manually browse to /media/yourusername/yourdrive to get access to the other drives (or wherever else you are mounting them).
For example I have to do this on Virtualbox:

Congratulations. The time has come for you to learn about the linux filesystem structure.

Click Computer. It will show you a list of directories. In the list, choose 'media', then choose your user name. You should be able to find your way around from there.

The fun and learning will continue way over 1 year. It's been 1.6 years for me and I love it too. I see the faults, but it really is amazing how well it runs for me. Blazing fast compared to windows, but that is not saying much. Turtles are blazing fast compared to windows.
