Problem with Opera and LM uninstall/install

Post by dave1new »

Opera Version:77.0.4054.146 is giving problems... First I updated Opera. Then problem started. I uninstalled it / or so I thought.

This is the msg returned when I tried to uninstall opera:

Code: Select all

E: The package opera-stable needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.
E: Internal error opening cache (1). Please report.

W: Ignoring file 'signal-xenial.listsudo' in directory '/etc/apt/sources.list.d/' as it has an invalid filename extension
I am running OS Linuxmint 19.3 Mate... with opera Version:77.0.4054.146
In addition to the above msg which was copied from the Synaptic Manager, my Software Manager will not open/start - or uninstall/install.. Recover of Opera was performed and was uneventful... My Terminal says opera must reinstall but cannot locate an archive???
Any help or thoughts are welcome

We need to delete the file signal-xenial.listsudo but to be SAFE let's look at its contents first. Tell us the output of

Code: Select all

cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/signal-xenial.listsudo
Click on the </> button and put the output between the two code blocks:
put the results in here
Here is the response when I tried to uninstall Software Manager:

There seems to be a programming error in aptdaemon, the software that allows you to install/remove software and to perform other package management related tasks.

Details:

org.debian.apt: E: isn't a valid package name

Here is the response to sudo apt update :

Open Software Sources and click on Additional Resources. Uncheck CD-ROM (Installation Disc). Close Software Sources.
Reboot
Open a terminal and run the following command:

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
Please post the results in your reply.

Hello, dave1new.
  • Let us start by removing the 0 byte file (empty file) named signal-xenial.listsudo from the directory /etc/apt/sources.list.d.
    Terminal command to do so:

    Code: Select all

    sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/signal-xenial.listsudo
(You cannot remove this file from inside Software Sources)
    .
  • Next launch Software Sources and disable the CDROM repository.
    deb cdrom:[Linux Mint 19.3 _Tricia_ - Release amd64 20191216]/ bionic contrib main non-free
    Close Software Sources.
    .
  • Then execute the command sudo apt update again and share its screen output with us one more time, please.
Regards,
Karl

Hello, dave1new.

About the problem when trying to uninstall Opera (package opera-stable), reported in your initial post at the top of this thread:
The error message

Code: Select all

E: The package opera-stable needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.
E: Internal error opening cache (1). Please report.
implies 2 things:
  1. The software package opera-stable has been uninstalled only partially and is in an inconsistent state. This is why, following its inbuilt logic, the software management system first wants to re-install opera-stable in order to be able to remove it completely afterwards. (Really.)
  2. The other thing is that the repo, which once pointed to Opera software, is no longer in your software repositories. Cf. your own repository list shared above.
Please, execute the following terminal command and share its complete output with us: dpkg --list 'opera*'
This should tell us in which state your Opera installation is.

Regards,
Karl

Hi Karlchen etal,
Sorry for my tardiness. I haven't actioned the above suggestions yet.

My Synaptic Package Mgr is showing:

Code: Select all

E: The package opera-stable needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.
E: Internal error opening cache (1). Please report.

W: Ignoring file 'signal-xenial.listsudo' in directory '/etc/apt/sources.list.d/' as it has an invalid filename extension
My Update Mgr is showing an identical msg as shown above plus it says it cannot refresh updates!!

Karl, thanks for the response... Below are the results for the terminal entries you suggested... But I still have several issues:1/ I made a change in Software Sources... 2/ Software Mgr will not conduct install/uninstall processes .. 3/ The Update Mgr has a big X on the shield and will not do updates/ refers to Opera update error!!!

I am recovering from a heart event and I am having good days and not so good days. My tardiness is not intentional. I am retired and trying to return to Canada for testing but covid and reaction to meds is restricting my ability to travel... My old computer is my literal life-line... Any help rendered is much appreciated... Thank you, David

Hi @dave1new. These guys will probably come up with more ideas soon.
In the meantime, do you run Timeshift? Have you ever restored a snapshot?

Mikeflan Etal, I have checked Timeshift and the only one available that is pre this event is in Dec,2020. I fear massive time with updates etc.. But can someone also advise me of the possible ramifications if my current problems are a virus or some such malware???

I say try Timeshift if nobody comes up with a better idea. You can timeshift backwards and then return to the current if you need to for some reason.

I also recommend taking a whole disk (or whole partition) image every once in a while. They can come in handy at times like these.

Forget about viruses and malware. They are so rare on Linux you are unlikely to see one this decade.
