Firefox freezes 4-5 times per day after update (89.0.2)
My main desktop was offline for a while, when I assembled everything and ran all of the updates since the last time it was online I have this intermittent freezing issue in Firefox as well. Activity ball just keeps bouncing back and forth at the top of the tab, but the browser is completely non-responsive.
It is intermittent, but happens maybe 4-5 times a day. Does not seem page dependent.
This is on Linux Mint 20.1
Firefox is at version 89.0.2
Doesn't seem to matter if I use Kernel 5.8.0-59, or the HWE kernel (5.11.0-22)
When it happens the entire browser is non-responsive. I cannot switch tabs or scroll the current page. I have to kill the browser and restart it.
Is this the same as your symptoms?

FWIW,
My issues seem to have gone away after upgrading to 20.2.
I'm guessing it was some sort of dependency issue which is now fixed.

Re: Firefox hanging after update
Going to have to take this back.
The browser still hangs up every now and then, but it is less frequent, and it usually comes back if you wait, no need to go kill it anymore.
It is still kind of frustrating.
No one else?

Re: Firefox freezes 4-5 times per day after update
No. I don't think FF has froze on me for years. At least not on Linux. And I use it constantly. Very odd that it would freeze on your high-standard machine. Is this the same as your symptoms?
This is going to be hard to troubleshoot if it is not reproducible. I would try to reproduce it. I might even set up a script to repeatedly open simply webpages:
Code: Select all
firefox 'https://www.backyardnature.net/n/turtles.htm'
Code: Select all
firefox 'https://dev.to/code_jedi/create-a-simple-pomodoro-timer-in-python-l97'

Pjotr's page on Firefox :
https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... refox.html
contains some tips that may be useful because it seems that your browser doesn't really freeze, but suspends for a while. So, putting cache into RAM, disabling sessionstore, stopping video auto-play... could help.

Hello,
just installed Mint 20.2 Edge (because of Intel's 11th gen. CPU and graphic) and Firefox crashed twice in half an hour. Quite strange in my previous experience.

Re: Firefox freezes 4-5 times per day after update
Yeah, Firefox keeps freezing.
I thought it had gotten better with 20.2 but it didn't.
It is sometimes reproducible on certain webpages, but then when I try again later, they just work, so it is really difficult to troubleshoot.
Does anyone know if there is a way to get Firefox to output verbose debug info so I can see what is going on when this happens?
Next steps are to reset my config to default (I dread doing this, it took me so long to get all the privacy settings where I wanted them) as well as reinstall the browser and its entire dependency tree from the repositories to see if anything there is corrupt.
I'm guessing that since others are having the same issue, it isn't my install that is the problem though, but rather something bigger that is going on.

Re: Firefox freezes 4-5 times per day after update
I'm having this same issue with other browsers, Vivaldi, Firefox, Chromium, started with Opera. I'm on Tricia 19.3. Everything worked perfectly for months and months until a couple months ago. Sometime in May or June I ran update manager and I mistakenly allowed it to update Opera. That's when the browser freezing started. If I wait 5 or 10 minutes it will almost always suddenly start working again. But while it's frozen nothing works except I can move the mouse cursor around the screen.mattlach wrote: ⤴Wed Jul 28, 2021 1:39 pm Yeah, Firefox keeps freezing.

Re: Firefox freezes 4-5 times per day after update
What i can say is Firefow works well with Mint and my computer, don't worry about the number of tabs I have now 3014 tabs ... and Brave and Chrome .... open and my RAM is only 80% used

Interesting. I wonder what they might have in common that might have changed at about the same time.soundchaser59 wrote: ⤴Fri Jul 30, 2021 1:40 amI'm having this same issue with other browsers, Vivaldi, Firefox, Chromium, started with Opera. A common dependency maybe?

Re: Firefox freezes 4-5 times per day after update
Only thing I can think of trying (I have no problems with FF90 on 19.0,19.3 or 20.0) is, if you want to experiment, install Firefox ESR, which is the extended support release for enterprise version. Why Ubuntu, in its great wisdom, doesn't provide it in the repos is beyond me, because Debian does (at least for now) and it is the Debian default FF. If you do remove FF90 to install 78.12.0esr, don't forget to export your bookmarks first. 78.12.0esr works fine on several systems I have, but I haven't installed it on Mint. I have heard zero complaints such as yours about it on Debian lists. You'll also have to pay attention to your Preferences>General and update it manually when a new version appears, which isn't very convenient. If you give it a try let us know how it goes.

Mine seems random. All sorts of different sites.
I'm pretty close to just wiping my partition and doing a fresh Mint install. It is really starting to get obnoxious
