[Resolved] OpenSSL and Simplify3d Installation?

Post by RobZ_inT »

I'm having issues with a Simplify3D (S3D) installation. I'm able to download the Linux 64 bit version installer zip and run it as root from the downloads folder. The installation is to the /opt directory. Once the installer utility completes it opens S3D as expected, but once I close it I can't reopen it. I'm getting the OpenSSL error below. I reached out S3D support and their community forum but- nothing. Other users had the issue and their post was never responded to.

The FAQ says this about it: https://www.simplify3d.com/support/faq/#quest-6346. That's also the answer you see repeated on the forums. It says you should run the program as root so that it can access the serial port the printer is on.

Before doing that I'd suggest to try adding yourself to the dialout group, which I think should give you access to serial ports. You can do so through Users & Groups in your menu or with command sudo usermod -a -G dialout yourusername where you replace yourusername with your username. Try that and see if the program will run normally then (log out and log back in to make sure the new group rights are in effect). If not, try the command from the FAQ.

On the forums there is somebody that tried the method in the FAQ and then got an error they had too many installations for their license: https://forum.simplify3d.com/viewtopic. ... ssl#p57932. I think they're saying they had to remove the installation from their account before they could run the software with the method in the FAQ.

You're right that most topics about openssl issues on their forums go unanswered. If with adding yourself to the dialout group or the method in the FAQ you still can't get it to work I'd suggest contacting technical support. Mention you're using a Ubuntu 20.04 LTS based distribution. Your system meets their technical requirements.

OK- I figured it out after reading this page and playing with the line they suggest. https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/howto-run ... -in-linux/
"sudo /opt/Simplify3D-4.1.2/LaunchScript.sh" gets it to open. This probably wouldn't be as painful if I understood the terminal and Linux synntax better. I'm one of those awful users who like Linux for how it works and that it isn't Windows, but knows little to nothing about how to use something that isn't point and click.

Speaking of that- how does one go about building a "shortcut button" for the desktop that will run that command line?
PS: It works without "sudo" but a GUI S3D dialogue opened for me to enter my username and password for the program, whereas the terminal just asks for my Linux password. I selected "remember me" on the GUI and now if I paste /opt/Simplify3D-4.1.2/LaunchScript.sh it opens with no further action.

- Right-click the Cinnamon menu button and select Configure
- Go to the Menu tab and click on the "Open the menu editor" button
- On the left select a category in which you want the menu launcher for Simplify3D to appear
- Then on the right click the New Item button and give it a name and as command put in your:
/opt/Simplify3D-4.1.2/LaunchScript.sh

That should do it.

If there is an existing menu entry for Simplify3D you can instead also edit that in step 4 above and change the command from what it is now to your /opt/Simplify3D-4.1.2/LaunchScript.sh and that will also work.
