PB Laptop freezes hard since kernel update K4.15.0-151 [Solved by K4.15.0-153]

Post by karlchen »

Hi, folks.

I wonder whether it is only me on this specific old laptop, or whether others experience the same issue:
This Packard Bell laptop has been running on LM 19.3 for the past 2 years almost daily without ever having locked up completely.
No such issues, no such complete lockups for the past 2 years. This is true for all kernels up to and including 4.15.0-147.

Yet, since K4.15.0-147 has been upgraded to K4.15.0-151, the same laptop has locked up completely twice in two days.
By completely I mean: the mouse pointer does not move any longer. Keypresses have got precisely 0 effect. This applies to the shortcuts like <Ctrl><Alt><Backspace> and <Ctrl><Alt><SysReq>-r-e-i-s-u-b as well.
So after having waited for some minutes, when the harddisk LED had remained dark, too, I had to press the power button for 5 seconds. (I am really loathe to do so.)
In both cases, the machine had not been up and running for more than 2 hours, when the lock occurred.
Once it happened while I was visiting the forum. The other time it happened, when I was just about to click the [Shutdown] button.

After the second hard lockup had happened today, I decided to boot the previous kernel K4.15.0-147. So far the complete lockup has not happened again.

The good thing is that the system journal (and /var/log/syslog) have documented some serious problem, which occurred shortly before the complete lockup happened.

As this laptop is not really brand new, a hardware defect cannot really be excluded as the cause.

Yet, why then has it never happened when running under kernel K4.15.0-147, but happened twice, when running under kernel K4.15.0-151?
Might be a co-incidence. But I am not convinced.
Guess, this is one more reason to pay a visit to bugs.launchpad.net.

Regards,
Karl

1st, did you leave the most recent previous kernel version installed after updating to this one? See if you can go back to that kernel via restarting that PC, pressing the ESC key to select that kernel to boot to, and then uninstall that 4.15.0-151 kernel after wards. Restart one more time and see if the problem goes away.

2nd..If for whatever reason you cannot accomplish that method, try doing a Timeshift restore to before you updated to that -151 kernel.

For the moment, kernel K4.15.0-147 has been made the default kernel to be used on startup.
This way, my wife can power on the laptop and use it, without having to select that kernel in the Grub menu.
Tomorrow will tell, whether an emergency call will interrupt my office work all of a sudden, in case the old PB should lock up, although booted with kernel K4.15.0-147.

Found 2 bug reports on Launchpad, where kernel 4.15.0-151 seems to be the culprit.

Seriously, folks. If you don't have a reason to update your kernel do not update it. A working kernel should be left alone if you have a home desktop/laptop system. Working kernels only need to be updated because of a remote vulnerability (the last one was in 2019). People here will argue with me, but the fact is, any time you update your kernel you have a very real chance of breaking your system. I lock my working kernels on my host systems. Guest systems breaking aren't a big deal, but hosts definitely are. Once I have all my hardware working to my satisfaction, the only reason that I will update a kernel is a remote vulnerability, or when I do a distribution upgrade. I learned this the hard way a couple of decades ago. Also, folks here are upgrading from 20.1 to 20.2. Why? 20.1 is LTS, it is supported until 2025. When it reaches EOL a clean install of the next Mint version (21.0) will be in order. There really is no good point in upgrading before EOL, unless you like to break and fix systems, anyway.

Off-topic.There are other threads where you can argue about install/not install kernel/security/software updates,...

Here Karlchen is warning about a particular kernel update effecting several users.

Hello, Jo-con-Ël.

Thank you for pointing me to the Spanish thread. :)
So far I read it quickly only, but came about your post, where you mention that in a Launchpad bug thread a bug-fixed kernel 4.15.0-153 seems to be on its way.
Matches the notifications, which I received from the Launchpad bug thread, 4.15.0-151 is freezing intel 5th gen ThinkPad (T450), to which I had subscribed.
Cf. this announcement in the mentioned Launchpad thread: >here<
A test kernel is available here: https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~juergh/lp1938013/
We'd very much appreciate it if people could do some testing. Download the debs and install them with 'dpkg -i *.deb'. The kernel is unsigned so secure boot needs to be disabled.
So there is hope. :D - And, yes, it is the same bug fixed kernel, which you had mentioned in your post.

Regards,
Karl

Seriously, folks. If you don't have a reason to update your kernel do not update it. A working kernel should be left alone if you have a home desktop/laptop system.
In this respect you are totally wrong...I would have agreed with you if you had meant UPGRADING to another kernel series, but UPDATING within the same kernel numerical LTS series incorporates certain bug fixes as well as security updates to the kernel itself which IS for protection of the kernel and thus the entire operating system.

When one does not update the existing LTS kernel within its numerical series, you are leaving yourself open to holes in the Linux Mint LTS kernel, resulting in risk and endangerment to the overall system.

Please do not give very bad security practice advice like this as you are endangering other peoples systems by so doing if they follow this type of idiotic advice...If you wish to compromise your system and put it at risk, thats your business and your right...It is not your right to give very bad security advice that can and will hurt other peoples systems, whom like yourself, may follow this bad ideology because they are new to LM and don't know any better...DAMIEN

Buenas noches, Jo-con-Ël.

Yes, I noticed that K4.15.0-153 has been released as well. But I have not installed it, yet. Will very likely do so on Friday evening. I am really eager to learn whether my PB laptop will freeze or not, when booted with K4.15.0-153.

Hasta luego,

The first Linux install I did was Debian on floppies. I'm now running 5 different Linux flavors and FreeBSD. I know the difference between a remote vulnerability and a local vulnerability. If you are running a home system, and someone you don't trust can sit at your keyboard, then you have some real problems beyond whether you have the latest kernel update to fix a security hole (almost always escalation of privileges) requiring local access. I pay attention to the reason for the update and update for remote vulnerabilities. And, you can install kernels to fix bugs that aren't affecting your system. Go ahead, no skin off me. But if the latest and greatest kernel breaks your working system (and that happens a lot--read through this forum) it's on you.

For me, the bottom line is, 'If all of my hardware is working, and if there are no remote vulnerabilities being fixed by the next kernel, then I'm not installing it on my host systems', because it's a PITA to fix a broken system that didn't need to be.

I hereby explicitly confirm that I see it in the same way. This thread is about issues caused by a bug, which seems to have been introduced in kernel 4.15.0-151.
This thread is not the place to revive the discussion, whether installing available kernel updates makes sense or not.
Whoever wishes to discuss this question once again may, please, feel free to go to the "Chat about Linux Mint" sub-forum and create a new topic there.
Thank you, folks, for understanding.

Continuing my post above :

Time will tell, whether the (reproducible) hard freezes on this PB laptop will occur again or not.
Will wait a few days before marking this thread as [solved].
Freeze or no freeze, this is now the question.

Re: PB Laptop freezes hard since kernel update K4.15.0-151

Brief status update:
When booted with kernel K4.15.0-151, the hard lockups had occurred within 1 hour both (after 60 min, after 35 min.)
Now booted with kernel K4.15.0-153, the same PB laptop worked for 3 hours on Thursday, and for 4 hours on Friday.
Might be a good sign and a reason to be optimistic. :)
