Catastrophic sound failures in Zoom.

Post by Nobby023 »

Hi all,

I have a HP240 laptop computer running Cinnamon 20.2 which I have had for about 2 months now. I bought it in order to teach a university course online, at first all seemed well but increasingly I have had intermittent problems with the sound when using Zoom. Students complain of echo and distortion and this seems to be happening increasingly. Obviously with my role as a tutor I cannot permit this problem to continue. Fortunately I have the laptop setup dualboot so for the last 2 days of class I have booted in windows 10 without any problems soundwise.
In Cinnamon I have adjusted the sound levels in Alsamixer. No mic boost and the other levels not showing red. In Zoom I have the sound filter set to low and have set the mic volume both automatically and manually. Nothing seems to help. I use a Jabra 410 conference mic and abandoning this doesn't seem to help either.
I have also noticed the message "Your high CPU usage is affecting meeting quality¨ even before I had downloaded any work documents at all (as in memory empty) and no webpages open.
Not super savvy even though I have been a Mint user for a long time, I am disappointed to have to revert to windows for my classes. Any help gratefully received.

How did you install Zoom? I have not noticed any such problems with my setup, using the appimage.

Through the Software Manager. Would Appimage be more reliable?

@Nobby023,
I have been Zoom on LM 20 Cinnamon for over one year to teach classes. The only time I had an echo was when I tried to have two of my devices in the meeting at the same time, one as host and one as participant. Two devices close together create feedback. I have noticed this if one or more participants also have two devices at the same time, could be husband and wife in the same meeting.

FYI, I install the .deb from Zoom.us.

Hope that helps.

I wouldn't know. I only know that it seems to be working well for me.

Appimage vs .deb???

Do not know about Appimage but the the .deb is Mint specific and they update it frequently (like twice a month)!

Good luck!

Thanks for all your input, I uninstalled Zoom and reinstalled the .deb from the Zoom website. I'll see if it helps tomorrow I suppose.

Cheers!

Ahh thanks so much! I 've just seen your post now.

Anyway, after a few days teaching now, it seems to have done the trick.
I check Alsamixer after booting up, check now values are showing in red, and so far all seems well.

Happy Days!

Thanks for all imput!
