dragging a chrome tab to secondary monitor freezes mouse clicks

Post by weeple2000 »

I have a reoccurring problem. When the problem occurs, I am not able to click with my mouse. If I hit ctrl - alt - backspace on my keyboard, I can sign into a new x window session.

I can produce the problem by trying to drag a tab from chrome to my secondary monitor.

Can anyone else produce this issue?

I have tried the 5.8 kernel. It did not solve the problem so I reverted.

That's the wrong question, especially if nobody here has a setup exactly like yours.

The video card is 9 years old. It might have degraded components. The only thing I can suggest is that you beg, borrow or steal a more recent video card, either AMD or nVidia, from someone and see if the problem persists. The objective is to eliminate the video card as the cause.

I am a bit out of touch with hardware prices. I thought the pandemic put them out of whack. I built this PC pre-COVID intending to upgrade the graphics card down the rode. It looks like everything costs a fortune now though.

In the meantime I may avoid chrome in an effort to try to reproduce the problem outside of it.

Update on this issue. I am not sure what caused it. I wound up restoring a timeshift backup from a point I suspected was before the issue occurred. It seems to have gone away.

The issue also wasn't specific to chrome. I avoided chrome and still produced the issue.

Excellent. Timeshift probably saved you a week's worth of work :)
Run that inxi again and compare it to this:

Code: Select all

Graphics:
  Device-1: AMD Cape Verde XT [Radeon HD 7770/8760 / R7 250X]
vendor: Micro-Star MSI R7770-PMD1GD5 driver: radeon v: kernel
  bus ID: 08:00.0
  Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.9 driver: ati,radeon
  unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa
  resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz, 1920x1080~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: AMD VERDE (DRM 2.50.0 5.4.0-80-generic LLVM 11.0.0)
  v: 4.5 Mesa 20.2.6 direct render: Yes
This might be the key part: driver: ati, radeon; unloaded: fbdev, modesetting, vesa
Then watch your Update Manager activity closely for driver updates. You might have to avoid one of those for a little while to keep the problem from coming back.
