Video downloader recommendation
Hi all:
I'd like to get recommendations for a video downloader. I've used Synaptic but to no avail.
I'd also like one that isn't on the "cloud", meaning it's just working off some server where they track you, etc - if that's possible.
Thanks for replies

There's also a graphical interface, youtube-dlg, see https://www.how2shout.com/linux/how-to- ... 20-04-lts/
Despite the name, it can also download videos from anywhere, not just youtube, if you provide the url.

I think you can get youtube-dl in the Software Manager, and it has a built-in GUI.JoeFootball wrote: ⤴Sun Aug 01, 2021 3:01 pmI've had success with youtube-dl.Kraatz wrote: I'd like to get recommendations for a video downloader. I've used Synaptic but to no avail.

I've been using youtube-dl for a few years. It works well.
The version of youtube-dl in the repository is not the latest.
The latest version can be installed via the python3 'pip' application.
First install pip:
and then install youtube-dl
To check for and install updates:

Re: Video downloader recommendation
No, youtube-dl is a python script that runs on the command line in a terminal.

Re: Video downloader recommendation
Stay away --far away-- from the youtube-dl in the Mint repos. youtube-dl updates frequently to keep up with YouTube changes and, for some reason, the repo version is way behind and will.not.work. It has never been kept up-to-date and should be removed. Debian keeps theirs up to date, but for some reason Ubuntu doesn't. I don't have any experience with video downloader because I use the 'real' youtube-dl via Command line. Simple and it just works and can be easily updated from its home site.
