"Something went wrong with the screensaver" Crash Since 20.2

Post by Kendoori »

Am running Mint Cinnamon 20.2. I don't suspend my screen, but do have it go to screensaver/lockscreen. I will have left the machine idle overnight and will come back to this:

I am able to go to the console and unlock the desktop with no issue.

Here are my screensaver settings.

I have had this same issue three times in the past week.

I just upgraded to the lastest kernel this morning and now the PC won't enter the screen saver at all.

Re: "Something went wrong with the screensaver" Crash Since 20.2

Post by KT-GB-12 »

Me too. Yesterday I used the "Upgrade to 20.2" from 20.1.

I am using TTY logins if that matters.

The screen saver was working fine all day after the upgrade for both TTY-users.

This morning, first time it was called I came back to the black screen and message "Something went wrong .." No shxx!

Rolling back to 20.1. This is the second time I have tried 20.2. Last time was an .iso install and it was flaky to use, so I returned to 20.1.

Figured by now you would have fixed all the quirks, rather than add more problems. LOL

This is a user forum where users help other users. We can help work around "quirks" or point you the direction to report "quirks", but we do not fix them.

Here is the linuxmint / cinnamon-screensaver GitHub .

I see the OP of this thread has already opened an issue Something went wrong with the screensaver #392 . If others in this thread want to add their experiences to that issue, that may help solve it quicker. I do not use the screensaver so I have not run into this issue.

Just to add my voice to the thread, I'm having the same issue in 20.3 Cinnamon. I've turned off the screensaver. This seems to have started after the latest set of updates in the past few days. The system had been running fine for months up until yesterday.

I the same problem, but only occasionally, and I can't predict when it might happen. I get the screen message, but clicking on it does nothing, probably because I'm running (mint 20.3 Cinnamon) on an old mac pro 3,1. When it happens, I have to hold down the power button until the machine shuts down and then push it again to restart. So far, nothing has been lost, and as the screensaver works most of the time, I'm putting up with the problem. Any suggestions for getting it to work properly all of the time will be most appreciated.

In case it is helpful, here is the system info from a recent incident:
