SOLVED - Error Preventing Package List Loading

Post by efincoop »

Hello,

I have run into an issue today and cannot find a suitable solution searching the forum. I was attempting to update my TorGuard VPN client to the current version and received an error. Now when I try to run Synaptic Package Manager or the Software Manager they will not refresh or are unable to load the package list. The only error I get is The package torguard needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.

I have tried several command line apt commands to correct teh issue but they all return the same error mentioned above. I also see a reference to an internal error opening the cache. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

We need the full inxi report. Please post an inxi -Fxpmzr report. This will give us a concise overview of your hardware and how Mint sees it.

Here is how to generate the report and post it:

Boot from your installation media (USB/DVD)
Open a terminal window (Ctrl-Alt-t). Make it fullscreen to avoid unneeded linebreaks or chopped lines. Copy the following code and paste into the terminal then hit Enter/Return:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxpmrz
exactly as it has been typed here.

Go to Edit, Select All, and then Copy, come back here, click on reply then code tags, </>, and then paste.

The results will help us to help you.

I have tried to rebuild the packages cache by running the following commands:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get clean
cd /var/lib/apt
sudo mv lists lists.old
sudo mkdir -p lists/partial
sudo apt-get update
Still the same results.

I have also tried to reinstall the TorGuard package with

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get --reinstall install torguard
that was unsuccessful as well.

Should I try manually remove the TorGuard executable?

I tried to remove the TorGuard client via the command line. Results posted below. I am running out of ideas :(

Code: Select all

chris@FMS-3621:/var/lib/apt$ sudo apt-get remove torguard
[sudo] password for chris:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: The package torguard needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.

Are you using Tor Browser? If so, was TorGuard VPN installed thru Tor?

I am not using the Tor Browser. The TorGuard VPN client was installed independently with a the downloaded package.

Did you install from torguard-latest-amd64.deb?

If you installed from the .deb you can try this:

Code: Select all

sudo apt purge torguard

When I originally installed it yes, I used the latest deb package. Yesterday I tried to update it using torguard-v4.6.0-amd64.deb

I ran the command you suggested, but I get similar results:

Code: Select all

hris@FMS-3621:/var/lib/apt$ sudo apt purge torguard
[sudo] password for chris:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: The package torguard needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.

Let's see if it shows as a broken package. Open Synaptic Package Manager -> Edit -> Fix Broken Packages. If the Apply icon becomes available, click it.

Unfortunately it does and I can't get past it

Somehow I did get around it yesterday and ran everything I could under the maintenance tab, but nothing worked.

You may have to reinstall the original package.

Would that be the .deb file I mentioned above that I recently downloaded, or the original package I installed?

I believe it's looking for the original package.

The version I am running is v4.5.1 The oldest .deb package they have on their site is 4.6. I tried to install that and got the same error I received when I tried to install the latest version:

Is their a repair feature I could run from a live USB distro?

I also thought maybe Timeshift would be an option, but every time I try to run it, it says it is busy writing a snapshot :(
