Videos eternally loading linux mint 20.2

Post by lucasmdias »

I did a clean install of linux mint 20.2 cinnamon this weekend followed by firewall configuration, installing a few packages Guake, Plank, VLC, flameshot, chrome, gzip, catfish, qbittorrent, steam and spotify as usual using a script simple copied and pasted from notepad, and also configured Timeshift and Nvidia drivers. When I went to use the system I realized that the videos from youtube were loading "forever" I did some tests changing the Nvidia driver and the Kernel version but it didn't solve the problem. I redid the system installation and the problem persisted, but in the live version I used on the pendrive the videos were executed normally.

During the night something curious happened I left the notebook on but with the screen off and I had put a video to reproduce on youtube, in the middle of the night the video started to play as if it had loaded, I woke up scared thinking there was someone in my room, I paused the video and went back to sleep, today when I woke up I put the video to play, it had partially loaded the buffer, when it reached the part of the video that was not loaded the problem returned.

I've tested both on firefox and chrome.

Can anybody help me?

Welcome to the forum, lucasmdias.

Videos from youtube are coming via your internet connection and being displayed in your browser. If you updated your system after installation, you are not using the same browser version and settings. I do not know about Chrome, but I know Firefox has made recent changes which can affect downloads.

It is also possible you are using an updated version of the wireless driver. (I do not know that for sure; just mentioning possibilities.)

Are you using the same firewall configuration on the pen drive as you are on the installed system?

Does your pen drive have the Linux Mint 20.2 "Uma" - Cinnamon (Edge, 64-bit) ISO on it? That ISO has the earlier 5.11 kernel.

Just some ideas of what might be different which might contribute to the outcome you are seeing.

Hi, thank you for your response.

I tested both with and without the firewall on and had the same result.

About the kernel, the system installation was done using the default "Linux Mint 20.2 "Uma" - Cinnamon (64-bit)" version with 5.4 kernel on it, however I changed the kernel to 5.8 and 5.11 to check if the problem was on kernel. in the output of the command uname and inxi, 5.11 was the version I was testing.

After the original post I performed a series of tests to check if it was an internet connection problem, with the help of some guys from brazialian linux mint forum. Speed test and ping was normal, and using wired internet did not solve the problem discarding wireless or internet quality issues.

I think that is something DNS or ISP related, because i figured out the problem only happens on youtube, and using mobile network the videos play normally, even it doenst making much sense for me since I havent changed any DNS configuration and have been watching videos normally on other devices.

Can you guys imagine any other possibilities or ways to test it?

I do not normally troubleshoot internet connection issues, but I think rebooting the router is one suggestion which is normally made. I do not have any other ideas. Maybe someone else will.
