PlayOnLinux "Not available"

Post by rc45 »

Hi All,
I was looking forward to installing PlayOnLinux on my new Cinnamon 20.2 setup, but Software Manager says it's "Not available" - can someone please tell me why this might be?
Thanks in advance.

Hello,
Playonlinux is available in my software manager under games. But you should be able to install it from a terminal or synaptic package manager as well.
In a terminal do this

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
sudo apt install playonlinux
Good luck.

Thanks for answering.
When I do as you suggest, the computer says it will remove lots of packages e.g. audacity, firefox, gimp, libreoffice & loads of other things - what on earth is that about??

That is a great summary, and we like summaries. But we also like details. Can you post the exact output?

Do you want to continue? [Y/n]
I'm only new to Linux, but to my amateur eye it looks like it wants to remove a whole lot of important stuff in order to install PlayOnLinux, and I have no idea why.
Thanks in advance.

Re: PlayOnLinux "Not available"

Post by MikeNovember »

Hi,

1st part of the output:

apt says "The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:" and then "Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them".

So, the installation procedure of PlayOnLinux will not uninstall these packages from your system.

Simply, you have in your system some packages which are no longer needed, and this is not related to PlayOnLinux.

You can keep them, or remove them with 'sudo apt autoremove'.

2nd part of the output:

PlayOnLinux will be installed with some packages it needs. Suggested packages and recommended ones are also listed.

However, the abnormal thing is the list of packages that will be removed: "appstream ... xwayland". There is no reason apt removes these 97 packages when installing PlayOnLinux!

What is exactly the command you typed in the terminal?

Regards,

MN

PS: When I try to install PlayOnLinux 4.3.4 (the one in the distro) with Synaptic under Mint 20.2 Mate, Synaptic wants to install 220 packages more, but DOES NOT want to remove any. What does happen if you try to install POL with Synaptic?

Thanks for replying.
I entered exactly what kc1di suggested.
If I try on Synaptic, it says a very similar thing (see screenshot). Weird.

I'm having the same problem trying to install PlayOnLinux on Mint Cinnamon "uma" and wondered if anyone has found a way of installing PlayOnLinux without (possibly) having a lot of critical packages removed? BTW there seems to be a similar problem ("Not available") when trying to install Winetricks... Thanks!
