A fix posted on https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=213759, Comment 7 by limanyi works for me.

He advises to modify the following line in /lib/udev/rules.d/60-cdrom_id.rules
ENV{DISK_EJECT_REQUEST}=="?*", RUN+="cdrom_id --eject-media $devnode", GOTO="cdrom_end"
to
# ENV{DISK_EJECT_REQUEST}=="?*", RUN+="cdrom_id --eject-media $devnode", GOTO="cdrom_end"

Save the modified file and then reboot.

I was using kernel 5.4.0-81 without any problems. An update to kernel 5.4.0-84 introduced one of my optical drive trays opening after a key stroke to wake from suspend. Reverting to the previously used kernel 5.4.0-81 stopped that occurring.

In order to use the updated kernel 5.4.0-84, I used the fix posted by limanyi. This has to be executed as root.

Addendum: Today's updates negated that fix and we are back to square one. The file in udev/rules had to be amended again to avoid the gratuitous opening of the optical drive tray on wake from suspend.

Moreover, if the kernel if officially released with the "5.4.0-85.95" reference, will it be proposed to you by the update manager or will you stay with the PPA version?

Their warning is what it is.

I chose to install that kernel on a home PC as an experiment which has worked out for me. The prudent use of TimeShift makes such minor experimentation reversible and therefore feasible.

As for how a future kernel update via mintupdate would go? I have no idea, beyond if said kernel update has a higher version number then it''ll replace the unsupported Linux 5.4.0-85-lowlatency #95-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT Fri Sep 3 17:26:22 UTC 2021. Otherwise, the kernel I installed via the Canonical Kernel Team works fine on my system.

FYI. Optical drive open/close has also recently been happening to me running kernel 5.11.0-34 on Linux Mint 20.2 Cinnamon. It is not just affecting the 5.4 series kernels.

Our Gateway desktop was having the same problem. I booted with the available lower-numbered 5.4.0-81 kernel and then removed 5.4.0-84 and then in tagged it (don't remember if I did that in Update Manager or Synaptic Package Manager) so that the Gateway wouldn't received that kernel update.

Problem solved for that computer.

I did that, but when I looked at the blacklist, rather than looking like it would ignore just Kernel 4.15.0-156.163, it seemed that it would ignore all Kernal updates and I did not think that was what I wanted?

I found the answer, which is that "linux-meta" apparently is the kernal packages. From another posting, I learned that the blacklist is per user. Since there is a second profile, I was able to go to that one and choose the 'ignore the current update...' option for the problem kernal. This puts linux-meta=4.15.0.156.145 on the blacklist.

I only want to block that kernal, not all future updates, on the assumption/hope that the next one will fix the issue. If it doesn't, it's easy enough to revert again.

(Not sure what the other thing was that I unblacklisted, must've been something ancient and no longer applicable, that I had forgotten about putting there.)

Just thought I'd give an update.

I got a kernel update for 5.4.0-86.97 and installed that since I reverted back to the 81 series because of the DVD tray sliding out and then back in on a cold start or a reboot on my two desktop tower computers with the 84 kernel series.

Well, the the 5.4.0-86.97 kernel still has the DVD tray sliding out and then back in with the "newest" 5.4.0-86.97 kernel upon a cold start or a reboot. I had to uninstall the 86.97 kernel update, went back to the 81 series and then had to block the 86.97 kernel when it came back as an update. With the 81 series back in business for me, everything is running smooth again.

I'm guessing whoever is working on/with the 5.4.0 kernel does not work with a desktop tower computer with DVD drives installed in them.

I am on the 5.11 kernel series as it only acts up on a COLD BOOT. but rebooting the computer is fine as there is no issue then. even the newest kernel just offered hours ago now (5.11.0-36) still has the drive tray eject issue.

Just change back to the old kernal using "advanced boot options" which you access using shift key during boot, you don't have to timeshift.

After booting to the old kernal, use update manager to delete the new kernal.

Or it's migrated to only opening when it wakes from standby? That's the only issue mine has had, never had it opening on boot. Happens with both 4.15.0-156 and 158, but not 4.15.0-154 and earlier.

I can't comment about the 'standby' mode since I don't use that on my desktop (it's always active (I basically leave my computer on all of the time) besides monitor powering off after 30min of inactivity). but I do know mine is consistent with the 'cold boot' (i.e. always has tray eject/close issue on one of my two SATA DVD drives) vs 'reboot' (i.e. no issues, everything appears to be normal).

this happens with the newest kernel just offered in a very recent kernel update (as in the last day or so tops) on Mint v20.2-Cinnamon which is '5.11.0-36'. NOTE: apparently people say that with the 5.11 series kernel that 5.11.0-27 was the last known working version without the bug based on comments in here, which now makes there being two kernels released since... 5.11.0-27 (supposedly no bug here) to 5.11.0-34 to the current 5.11.0-36. but given what you say it must be similar on 4.15 kernel series with the two most recent having the DVD tray issue.

so I guess at this point we pretty much got to sit back and wait. or just opt for the potential temporary fix by 'limanyi'(?) or just don't install the newer kernels with the bug is about all we can do.

but on a personal level... I generally leave my computer on all of the time and typically reboot and don't cold boot all that much, which the bug does not effect me as it's only when I 'cold boot' is when the drive tray issue acts up, and like another user here, it's a bit annoying because my desktop case has a door on it in front of the DVD drive tray so when that's closed, which it generally will be, the drive tray jams into the door and I got to open the door so the drive tray can finish coming out and go back in and then close the case door again like usual.

p.s. but apparently given what you say it's effecting Mint v19 series and Mint v20 series since I know the 4.15 kernel is installed by default on Mint v19.0-19.2.
