That doesn't sound like you're going to change, "fix", anything, tell me I'm wrong.

You're wrong. On so many individual levels that it's hard to know where to start so I personally won't even try: just hang on for a bit; simple bug; will be fixed by the next kernel update that comes down the pipe.

Oddly this morning I see a 5.4.0-87.98 update (18.04.78).
I am hesitant to install this if there is an 0-88 forthcoming.

Just ignore it. You should get 88 within 24 hours, it takes some time to distribute it over the several mirrors that all have their own update schedule.

I updated to 5.4.0-87 this morning. It booted without opening the DVD drive, so it seems to have solved the problem.

But I'm a little confused. Some people have referred to 5.4.0-88. Is that the current version, or a typo?

I just downloaded 5.4.0-88 today. The prior version I had was 5.4.0-86.

I'm updating my kernels through the Update Manager GUI interface. What method are you using to update kernels?

I also used the Update Manager. The "Linux Kernels" view shows 5.4.0-87 as the version "Supported until April 2023." The previous version was 5.4.0-86. Refreshing the Update Manager changes nothing. I'm running Mint 19.3 Cinnamon. Maybe 5.4.0-88 is only for version 20?

It appears the recent v5.11 kernel update (5.11.0-37) fixed the issue for me as I shut down computer, powered it back on (so it's a 'cold boot' which is where the issue was before with me), and no more drive tray ejecting and retracting on one of the two drives I had. so now things are back to normal.

I would guess it is more likely this might be a factor of when the different mirrors get each version. I know I have seen posts in the past where people had a specific kernel version a day before it showed up for me in my Update Manager. Looking at the Changelog list I see both the -87 and -88 versions there, so there was a release of each.

Kernel changes are cumulative. The changes put into 5.4.0-87 will be in all the kernels after it. If you look at the 5.4.0-88 changelog, there were not many changes made for that release. There were quite a few for 5.4.0-87.

I have seen in the past where the changelog listed as a change to reverse a prior fix. Whatever fix was added caused more problems than it fixed, so it was undone. But, it was undone at that newer patch level. It was not undone for all the prior patch levels (ie. newer versions of an older kernel were not released).

Neither of the following kernels exhibits the CD/DVD open & close upon a cold boot issue nor the gpio-aaeon related error messages that I mentioned in an earlier post.

5.4.0-87 is going to fix this:

I.e., more completely, should be fixed by 4.15.0-159-generic, 5.4.0-87-generic, 5.11.0-37-generic, 5.13.0-16-generic.

4.15.0-159 has fixed the problem for me (mine was opening on resume from suspend).

On my machine, HP 8300, the 5.4.0.81 kernel freezes the system when I use Firefox browser. No such problem with .84

I didn't have the problem because I didn't update the kernel which works fine.
Thanks to this thread, I now know which kernel to upgrade to.
