[SOLVED] Wine package doesn't work
Hi! I installed Wine package from software manager (the version suggested by Mint team, file is called wine-installer) but it doesn't work. I tried to restart my pc, I have the Wine entry in the Mint menu, but I can't run any .exe file. I read in the package reviews that I'm not the only one having trouble with this package, can you fix this?

Re: Wine package doesn't work
I found that the Winehq.org has the best wine version, download it and follow their instructions.

Re: Wine package doesn't work
Yes, but I think this package should work anyway, it would be useful for non experienced users.

Try playonlinux, which is a wine front end that will juggloe wine versions for you. Just remember that wine fails more often than not anyway. Look up apps on the wine database (https://appdb.winehq.org/). You want to see a gold rating from a recent test to have any confidence with that database's results.

Re: Wine package doesn't work
there is another option, get Wine from CodeWeavers, it is a package called 'Cross Over'.
CodeWeavers is a major developer of Wine, and Cross Over is their $$ dollar version which comes with Support direct from CodeWeavers.
I bought it, and it erased all of my 'Wine' problems..

Re: Wine package doesn't work
As was said before, Codeweaver has a wine package called Crossover which is a commercial version of wine. They collaborate with Winehq.org and enhance wine for a retail version.

You are using which Linux Mint version precisely, please?FinixFighter wrote: ⤴Thu Sep 16, 2021 9:55 amHi! I installed Wine package from software manager (the version suggested by Mint team, file is called wine-installer) but it doesn't work.
I ask, because the wine-installer has worked perfectly on all of my LM 19.x systems, 32-bit and 64-bit Mint editions.

Re: Wine package doesn't work
The Wine installer from the software manager didn't work for me either. What worked for me was:
To start configuring Wine, run the winecfg command in your terminal. The command installs Mono and Gecko and sets the Wine environment.
Click on the “Install” button, and the installation will start. Once done, a new dialog will appear, prompting you to install Gecko. Again click on the “Install” button. When the installation is completed, the Wine configuration dialog will be shown. On the applications tab, choose Windows 10 for the default settings. Once finished, close the dialog box.
If you need to modify your program files, Wine's files are stored in /home/user/.wine/drive_c/ by default.
/.wine/ is hidden. Press control + H to show hidden files.
Code: Select all
$ sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
$ wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key
$ sudo apt-key add winehq.key
$ sudo add-apt-repository 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ focal main'
$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-stable
Code: Select all
$ winecfg
If you need to modify your program files, Wine's files are stored in /home/user/.wine/drive_c/ by default.
/.wine/ is hidden. Press control + H to show hidden files.

Re: Wine package doesn't work
Yes, it works if I install Wine that way (same instructions given by Wine https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu), but the problem is about the Wine-installer offered in the Software Manager (here is the repository https://github.com/linuxmint/wine-installer). Since this package exists, I think it should work; moreover it is extremely useful for basic users with no experience at all. In fact, I reported this problem because a friend of mine found it, and he doesn't even know what a terminal is.Michael_Hathaway wrote: ⤴Tue Nov 02, 2021 9:02 pm The Wine installer from the software manager didn't work for me either. As near as I can tell from posts here, that's always because someone fiddled with some other install method first, which is what the OP did.Michael_Hathaway wrote: ⤴Tue Nov 02, 2021 9:02 pm The Wine installer from the software manager didn't work for me either.

I did it but still doesn't work.. I didFlemur wrote: ⤴Wed Nov 03, 2021 9:49 am Remove all your wine packages (sudo apt-get purge "wine*"

Edit: after removing the wine* packages and the repo, runsudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get purge "wine*"
, then removed the repo from the software sources, and I also removed the Wine key. Then I did sudo apt-get update
and then I also restarted my pc I then reinstalled wine-installer via the software manager. I am able to open the Wine configuration screen (via Menu->Wine->Configure Wine, or giving winecfg), but can't run exe file, neither with double click nor giving wine name_of_file.exe
, that's what I get:
Code: Select all
it looks like wine32 is missing, you should install it.
as root, please execute "apt-get install wine32"
0009:err:module:__wine_process_init L"C:\\windows\\system32\\HabboLauncher-Setup-1.0.31.exe" not found

That's a weird program: https://github.com/lpmatos/gexFinixFighter wrote: ⤴Wed Nov 03, 2021 10:23 am name_of_file.exe[/c], that's what I get:Code: Select all

Start with a new wine "prefix", namely do
Code: Select all
mv ~/.wine ~/.wine.old
WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=/home/<your-username>/.wine winecfg
/home...
part rather than using ~/.wine)(https://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#How_do_I_cr ... _system.3F)
then try running
Code: Select all
wine notepad
