Update a PPA (Telegram)
I downloaded the Telegram PPA. I read that it must be updated via the terminal (through the PPA?), but I'm not finding much on how to do that. So, my question is, how do I update a PPA software package?

If a PPA has been added and enabled in your Software Sources, it will be part of your usual updates in Update Manager.malonn wrote: ... how do I update a PPA software package?
Re: Update a PPA (Telegram)
I've received two different answers. Software Updater will update if it's enabled? I'll look into how to do that. No need for hand holding.
How do I access PPA properties? I am about new as they come to Linux.

Re: Update a PPA (Telegram)
My answer was in regard to updating an application which is maintained by an existing PPA entry in your Software Sources. The other answer was in regard to updating the existing PPA entry itself. Maybe both of those aren't answers to your real question.malonn wrote: I've received two different answers.
Perhaps you can give some clarity on what you want to do, what you downloaded from where, what directions you may be following, what PPA you're using, what might be installed already, etc.malonn wrote:I am about new as they come to Linux.
Re: Update a PPA (Telegram)
Thanks for hanging in there with me, Joe. I'm just as green as they come when talking about Linux. I basically have a search engine open 24/7 though.
I guess my question is answered. Let me clarify: if I install a PPA as such,
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:atareao/telegram
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install telegram
it will be updated automatically with the Update Manager? If I understand correctly, you all said "yes". Telegram is frequently updated, and I want the latest version as often as possible. When I asked my question, I didn't know it would be updated by the Update Manager. It sounds super easy, and that it should be updated frequently. I just want to be sure that that's the case. Looks like that's the case though. So, I think I'm good to go. Would love to hear any pertinent information, if there is any. I like to learn, and Linux to a noob is a learning experience.

Re: Update a PPA (Telegram)
It will be updated automatically via Update Manager when the PPA maintainer updates the PPA. Looks like the last update to the PPA was 2021-09-25 (as I type this).malonn wrote: ... it will be updated automatically with the Update Manager?
Let's discuss the three commands you posted. The first one adds the PPA to your Software Sources (you can do this via Update Manager too (Edit > Software Sources > PPAs > Add), but it's the same result). The second refreshes your Software Sources with the latest info, inclusive of from the newly-added PPA. And the third installs Telegram from the PPA (where if Telegram were also in the regular repos, it would select the PPA version as its presumably newer).malonn wrote: Would love to hear any pertinent information, if there is any.
Let's talk about PPAs. They're a great way to get applications that aren't available in the regular repos, or get newer versions of what may be available. That said, when you're using a PPA, you're putting your trust in the PPA maintainer, which is something you should consider, especially with something like a secure messenger.malonn wrote: I like to learn, and Linux to a noob is a learning experience.
Allow me preface this by saying that I'm not trying to tell you to not use this PPA, or any PPA for that matter. Rather, I'd suggest that you make an informed decision for yourself. From what I can tell (and I concede my investigation did not exceed two minutes), this is not an official Telegram PPA. This appears to be a third-party maintaining it, and you need to trust this third-party is indeed providing Telegram as you expect it to be, and be updated at a frequency that you expect it to be, and that the entity maintaining it will be the same one going forward.
Again, I'm not trying to scare you away from using PPAs, but just want to inform you so that you can make an educated decision for yourself.
Edit: Here's an informative article on PPAs. It's Ubuntu-centric, but the overall context is helpful, and Linux Mint has its own versions of the tools being demonstrated.

Re: Update a PPA (Telegram)
Awesome info, Joe. So, if/when the PPA maintainer updates the repository, my system will update via the Update Manager. Me happy.
Thanks for the heads up about PPA's. I was looking at snap packages, but apparently Mint disabled them for security reasons and I'm going with the Mint developers judgement on that one. I'll avoid snaps forever.
I could have went with the package available on the Telegram website, but I like the "behind the scenes", system integration of PPAs. For example, the PPA can be pinned to the panel, includes an icon and a start menu entry, etc.
Thanks for your time, Joe. You've been a big help.

You're welcome.malonn wrote: Thanks for your time, Joe. You've been a big help.
Yes, PPAs can make for seamless updates, as long as they're properly maintained. I do use some PPAs when I need to, but I do my due diligence when selecting one, especially if it's something like a secure messenger or similar. And no one is monitoring PPAs for me, so I check-in on them from time to time in order to ensure they're still updated them as expected, and the original maintainer that I vetted in the beginning is still the same one at the helm now.
Here's a website which is very helpful with Linux Mint tips, and this page from it talks about PPAs, noting a bit of negative bias though (but it's not necessarily wrong) ...
https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... takes.html
And you'll find a lot of passionate opinions on Snap. Here's Linux Mint's statement on them. I don't use them, nor Flatpak, AppImage, etc., which also have their share of opinions.
Just fyi, I'll bet you could have gotten the package direct from Telegram working the way you wanted it like the PPA, but if you're comfortable with the PPA, then I can't debate it.
Good luck!
Re: Update a PPA (Telegram)
Thanks for the link. I need sites that like to get me up and running with Linux.
I'll stick with the PPA for now, but I know in the future I'm going to be reinstalling as new versions of Mint come out. So, I'll read up and soak it all in and as I go along and make different decisions as I learn.

Re: Update a PPA (Telegram)
Just complementing:
I don't install, that is, I don't add the PPA.
I prefer to go to PPA once in a while and check for software updates and download the most current ".deb" file.
This way I keep the older ".deb" file in case the new one doesn't work well.
The downside of this is that there is no automatic software update. You uninstall the old one and install the new one manually.
The advantage is a "clean", "new" installation, not an upgrade over the old installation. It avoids presumed garbage accumulation.

Re: Update a PPA (Telegram)
I've run across one file that uses a .deb. Must not be prolific. 'Course I'm new as crap to Linux...
I'm gonna take Joe's advice and keep PPAs to a minimum. I'll just check the 3 that I use for maintenance on a regular basis. If they aren't maintained, I uninstall them with ppa purge.

Re: Update a PPA (Telegram)
The .deb format is a popular option for Debian/Ubuntu-based distros, such as Linux Mint. Think of it as a native install file that works outside of Update Manager, so most things installed that way will require your intervention for keeping updated.malonn wrote: I've run across one file that uses a .deb. Re: Update a PPA (Telegram)
why not just use the Telegram app in Software manager and quit worrying about a PPA being trust worthy?
I am using Telegram and it updates quite frequently.

Good call. I'm just so new to Linux. It's been a ride so far. I'm getting there though.

Re: Update a PPA (Telegram)
Mine is showing version 3.1.8 and it updated 2 days ago.
Re: Update a PPA (Telegram)
Outstanding. I think I'll update to the Software Manager's install. If it's up to date, and is one less PPA, then I'm in.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I don't remember how I installed it anymore, been way too long ago for me.greengnome wrote: ⤴Tue Oct 26, 2021 2:00 pmHow is that? I only get the choice bewtween 2.1 and 2.8 (flatpak) from the Software Manager.
