I am running an older kernel 5.4.x, and I tried upgrading to 5.11 about a month ago. That failed for various reasons: screen resolution was 640x480 and couldn't be changed, updating/reinstalling video driver had no effect, parts of application windows were missing - OK/Cancel buttons, maximize/minimize/close (I think), etc. I've no idea if the system was still subject to freezing - I didn't wait long enough to find out, and had to boot safe mode to be able to roll back. (I couldn't use the system updates application since the OK button was missing from the kernel warning screen, LOL.)
It just happened again, hence my post. Any idea how to look into this? What logs I should pull? etc?
I'm open to upgrading to kernel 5.11 again, if someone can help me navigate the weirdness involved there.
EDIT - Forgot to say that when the system locks up, I've never seen it recover on its own. I've left it 5-8 minutes on several occasions, and I think I left it for 20+ minutes once. Usually I only give it a couple seconds before restarting the session (it's my work system, so I can't always wait around). I don't think it's a memory issue since I've got 8GB of RAM, and I typically am only running Firefox, LibreOffice Calc, and/or Geany (lightweight IDE).
EDIT 2 - Marking this as solved. Issue seems to be related to using Geany. My fix is to use ZeroBrane instead.
EDIT 3 - Not solved. It just happened again without Geany running.
EDIT 4 - Solved. Removed graphics card, and just using integrated graphics, lol.
