(solved*) Unable to solve Davinci resolve- Unsupported GPU processing mode ERROR. With AMD graphics.

Post by davinci reolve123 »

Greetings to the members of Linux community. (computer details with inxi -Fxxxrz at the end)

I am on single boot linux mint 20.2 cinnamon. 16GB ram
I recently moved from windows to Linux and everything has been brilliant except my problems with Davinci resolve, which is very important for my work, it used to work well in Windows 10 for me.
I installed Davinci resolve under the guidance of this video on youtube titled - Install Davinci Resolve 17 in Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Debian, and Its Based Distributions (2021) ; youtube channel name - Tiwo Satriatama
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nb7A6IaNds4
- this seems to work for several people in the comments of the video. I also tried searching for other answers.

I followed all the steps properly and was able to install Davinci resolve BUT whenever i start davinci resolve a window appears with title - Unsupported GPU Processing Mode ; and description - Please review the GPU drivers and GPU configuration under preferences.
I am given the options of 'Update configuration' or 'Quit'.
Image https://ibb.co/MVkqqJx
Image https://ibb.co/2Scg6XD

When i click update configuration, it takes me to a preferences menu with several options. Is some problem in recognizing GPU?
Image https://ibb.co/ZSYYFR5
Image https://ibb.co/j4pSH4K
Image https://ibb.co/7YHXb2x

This is the only software i would need to leave windows forever.
Can someone help me understand and solve the problem? I hoped that davinci will atleast run on linux, even if slower. I have tried the other open source options like shotcut, olive, kdenlive and read several such suggestions, i do not dislike these but please understand that for certain reasons i must get davinci running or i would sadly need to get windows again.

I hope you are able to view the images. I had switched form win 10 to zorin os, then to linux mint hoping that the problem may get solved here. I hope it does.
Awaiting reply. Any help will be appreciated.
Sorry for any mistakes in the question.
Thank you.

IMHO it is worth you open a new thread on Hardware support>Graphic cards section as It looks like there's a problem whith AMD graphic driver (dedicated graphic card is missing in list).
Graphics:
Device-1: Intel UHD Graphics 620 vendor: Dell driver: i915 v: kernel
bus ID: 00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:5917
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.11 driver: amdgpu,ati,modesetting
unloaded: fbdev,vesa resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel UHD Graphics 620 (KBL GT2) v: 4.6 Mesa 21.0.3
direct render: Yes
Look at Davinci Resolver requirements any way. It looks like you need a properly installed amdgpu (pro?) driver even you can try with integrated intel card increasing VRAM up to 2GB

Thank you for a quick reply.
I would open the topic on Graphics card. I think davinci cannot see my graphics cards...? It should atleast run. How can i properly install amd or use intel graphics card?
I can also mention that the laptop has 2gb AMD radeon graphics.

I saw this in requirements - is it present in linux? - GPU supporting OpenCL 1.2 or CUDA 11.

Hi,

From this page: https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/view ... t=90190#13

Operating system:
Operating System
What operating systems can I use?
The ReadMe file for DaVinci Resolve and DaVinci Resolve Studio contains the currently supported operating systems and versions. It’s important to use a supported operating system as we cannot guarantee compatibility with other versions.

Can I use a Linux distribution other than CentOS?
We do not test or certify any distributions of Linux other than our designed platform of CentOS. As such we cannot guarantee compatibility or performance when using any other distribution.

DaVinci Resolve is a professional application and needs to be stable above all else. Given the many different distributions and variations for Linux operating systems, it is simply not possible for us to develop, test, support and guarantee robust operation on any other distributions.

For this reason, we even provide our own ISO for installing the correct version of CentOS with all required dependencies.

If you wish to use DaVinci Resolve on Linux we only recommend installing the application on the currently supported CentOS. If you wish to try a custom installation, or a different distribution then you may wish to look through our user forums to see if any other end users can offer assistance with this.

For DaVinci Resolve Studio, Blackmagic Design can only provide you with Technical Support when using a supported distribution.
So, it is useless to make an attempt to install Da Vinci Resolve on Linux Mint.

Hardware requirements:
DaVinci Resolve works on a wide variety of platforms with performance characteristics based on hardware configurations. The general requirements are the same, whether you are using the free version or the Studio version, although some advanced features in the Studio version may require a greater system specification.

Some systems that are below specification may run Resolve, however we cannot guarantee compatibility, performance or stability. If you are experiencing any problems with Resolve, first make sure that your system meets the requirements.

These requirements include:
A 64 bit operating system as detailed in the ReadMe file and configuration guide
A minimum of 16GB of RAM is recommended, 32GB if using Fusion
An NVIDIA, AMD or Intel GPU with a minimum of 2GB of VRAM that supports versions greater than either supports Metal, OpenCL 1.2 or CUDA 10. (CUDA compute 3.0)
A modern quad core CPU or greater
For Intel UHD Graphics 620, Intel provides no way to install its drivers in Linux. Metal, OpenCL 1.2 or CUDA 10 will probably not work.

In inxi;
driver: amdgpu,ati,modesetting
unloaded: fbdev,vesa resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
Wrong drivers, no chance amdgpu drivers match Intel GPU.

So, wrong OS + wrong GPU + wrong drivers = no chance to work.

If it worked with Windows 10, go back to Windows 10 to use it.

Regards,

MN

That is unfortunate. Maybe dual boot is the option, as i am not sure if CentOS is fit for me as a newcomer to linux. However, davinci resolve website gives an option of linux installation as in their readme attached below.

Others with Linux Mint are using it. The person in this post indicates
It's worth noting that I tried the latest amdgpu drivers, then I also uninstalled that and tried the amgpu-pro install instead of the standard one. Since neither of those helped, but I was having issues with Davinci resolve not even seeing my card (openCL issue), I'm now using the ROCM drivers and when my system is up and running, everything works perfectly. No issues with anything such as gaming, 3D modelling or davinci resolve editing now.
I believe I've seen others using DaVinci Resolve in posts on this forum as well, so CentOS is not a requirement.

You have one of the lucky laptops with AMD Topaz where some bugs upstream of inxi resulted in your AMD card not showing in the inxi output even though it is there and the graphics drivers are loaded. If you upgrade your version of inxi, then you will see your AMD card. Here is How to Update the inxi command to the latest version.
davinci reolve123 wrote: Mon Nov 29, 2021 4:17 amI saw this in requirements - is it present in linux? - GPU supporting OpenCL 1.2 or CUDA 11
You can run glxinfo -B to get OpenCL info about your install. I expect your computer has a much higher version of OpenCL than 1.2.

However, you are going to have to manually switch to use the AMD graphics. I will put together some info in another post on how to use the AMD graphics and I will also see what other info I can find with respect to using DaVinci Resolve. In the meantime, upgrade your inxi and post new output.

Intel drivers load automatically from the kernel. In fact, the output shows they are installed. If you do not understand how the graphic drivers work, please do not post on topics giving out incorrect information like you have done here.

The modesetting driver is clearly listed there. The amdgpu driver for the AMD card is also listed. These are the correct drivers for the correct GPUs. And considering others are using the application on Mint, your comment about the OS also appears to be inaccurate.

Moderation Note: I have merged the posts from the two topics (this one and the one created in the Graphics Cards & Monitors section of the forum) and deleted one post which was now duplicate information (it copied info from this topic to the other one). The AMD graphics card is not missing as indicated by the lspci info posted in this topic.

Hi,

From the Inxi:
Graphics:
Device-1: Intel UHD Graphics 620 vendor: Dell driver: i915 v: kernel
bus ID: 00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:5917
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.11 driver: amdgpu,ati,modesetting
unloaded: fbdev,vesa resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel UHD Graphics 620 (KBL GT2) v: 4.6 Mesa 21.0.3
direct render: Yes

From this inxi output, there is an Intel UHD Graphics 620, loaded, and with a i915 driver.
From the moderation note "The AMD graphics card is not missing as indicated by the lspci info posted in this topic". It seems there is a bug in inxi, and that the card is an AMD Topaz, with its amdgpu driver. OK.

Da Vinci resolve expects "Metal, OpenCL 1.2 or CUDA 10" in its hardware requirements. CUDA is not available, since it is NVidia proprietary, and there is no NVidia card. Metal is Apple proprietary.
Concerning Open CL, there are posts in Blackmagic forum about DaVinci Resolve unable to find Open CL with Intel UHD Graphics 620.
AMD Topaz supports Open CL 2.0. However the authors of the video showing how to install DaVinci Resolve under Linux use an NVidia card and say "There are reports that AMD GPU may work now", which means that AMD GPU for DaVinci Resolve does (did?) not work on a regular basis under Linux.

So, I resume and conclude:
- not the good OS for DaVinci Resolve: the only Linux OS recommended by supplier is Centos, not Linux Mint.
- not the good GPU for DaVinci Resolve: under Linux GPU computation (with Metal, Cuda or Open CL) is not available for Intel 620, and AMD cards are not reputed to work at any time under Linux for DaVinci Resolve.

All this explains "whenever i start davinci resolve a window appears with title - Unsupported GPU Processing Mode ; and description - Please review the GPU drivers and GPU configuration under preferences."

OP will be able to use DaVinci Resolve under Windows, in "Basic Mode" (no GPU computation) with its Intel 620 GPU as it appears from Blackmagic forum posts, or maybe with full GPU computation with its AMD Topaz card.

Regards,

MN

PS: OP has decided to install Windows in dual boot in order to run DaVinci Resolve.

I gave a link to a post which is only a couple of months old where a person on this forum using an AMD card said they had no problems using DaVinci Resolve. I consider recent first-hand experience to be more valuable than something on a video.

I have not had a chance yet to check, but I recall others on this forum using DaVinci Resolve successfully.
MikeNovember wrote: Mon Nov 29, 2021 1:59 pmAll this explains "whenever i start davinci resolve a window appears with title - Unsupported GPU Processing Mode ; and description - Please review the GPU drivers and GPU configuration under preferences."
Maybe it explains it for you, but I've helped people with this type of error get their software working. One usually has to pass the GPU parameters to the software in order for them to be known. Sometimes that is done in the command line and sometimes that is a setting in the software.

The OP has asked for help in getting this to work in Mint. So far, I have seen nothing to indicate it can not be done, therefore I will help them move forward with accomplishing their goal.

Recent first-hand experience of OP is that it does not work.

Same hardware configuration? Under Linux Mint?

Good luck! some obstacles:
- Problems might also come from hardware settings (BIOS / UEFI): is AMD card activated (the only one with Open CL capability)? Are the required 2GB NVRAM available / allocated to GPU?
- DaVinci Resolve is very new under Linux, its online user documentation mentions only MacOS and Windows, and even with the pay version, OP will not receive support from Blackmagic to run DaVinci on Linux Mint (support is only for one version of Centos, the one on which Blackmagic has developed and tested DaVinci Resolve for Linux).
The OP has asked for help in getting this to work in Mint. So far, I have seen nothing to indicate it can not be done, therefore I will help them move forward with accomplishing their goal.
- Linux Mint is not supported by DaVinci resolve (a good indication it cannot be done, for me).
- OP has now asked how to install Windows in dual boot with LM, in order to run DaVinci Resolve under Windows, see viewtopic.php?f=46&t=362267

Given it worked well on your Windows 10 install, then it is likely your AMD Radeon card is capable of running DaVinci Resolve.

Your laptop has an Intel iGPU and an AMD GPU. While the ability to switch between Intel and Nvidia is set up to automatically work in Mint, you have to take some additional steps to get the AMD GPU set up as the primary graphics rendering device in Mint.

To start a specific game or software using the AMD GPU, you would tell the computer to use the AMD graphics using the command line as explained by zcot in this post
if you normally start the game with the command: pong
then to use the amd dedicated gpu you would start it with: DRI_PRIME=1 pong
If you want to switch everything to primarily using the AMD GPU, you would use DRI_PRIME=1. However, that will only last for the current session.

If you want that to be a permanent change according to the first answer to this question How to configure an application to always run with DRI_PRIME=1 set? Is there an other way besides terminal?, you can set that variable as an environment variable so your computer always primarily uses the AMD GPU.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The above is general information for using the AMD GPU. To specifically use it in DaVinci Resolve you also need to have OpenCL installed.

I recommended taking a Timeshift snapshot before installing the OpenCL components. If you run into any issues, snapshots are the easiest way to completely undo a change without having to recall all the steps you need to undo.

The AMD drivers available from their website have an OpenCL package and it is possible to install just it. However, AMD made some recent changes to their driver installation download and instructions and you do not want to install the pro driver portion of the package, so let us know the updated inxi and we will see what is available from the website.

Once you have the OpenCL component installed, then you need to set up DaVinci Resolve to use the proper GPU.

This image you provided in your initial post is key to addressing the error message you posted.

For GPU Processing Mode, you want to uncheck "Auto" and then select OpenCL from the drop-down.
For GPU selection, you want to uncheck "Auto" and then select your AMD card.
Then you would save the changes and probably have to restart the application for the changes to be applied.

Thanks a lot to all of you for your replies and attempts to assist. I will surely keep trying to see if i can get davinci to work using the above methods, if it doesn't work i might try once again with fresh linux mint (earliest timeshift snap). if it works then can single boot, no need for dual boot.

Firstly, the output for opencl code is here -

I wasn't sure which AMD Radeon Topaz i had - so i downloaded the Topaz XT M260 Ubuntu x64 file - https://ibb.co/rFQcT0q Image from here - https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics ... on-r7-m260 One can select from here - https://www.amd.com/en/support
Still trying to install.

Thank you for sharing this post - https://askubuntu.com/questions/791022/ ... s-there-an
So... Inserting your assignment DRI_PRIME=1 into /etc/environment and then restarting should do what you're asking.
But sorry, i do not know how to add this to etc/environment. Also, when i try davinci-resolve into the command line, it does not run (command not found), maybe i have to type something else. Sorry, if this is basic, i'll try to learn from somewhere.

Will share if any results.
P.S. I think i can learn the environment one from here - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnvironmentVariables

This oibaf PPA mentioned in your glxinfo -B output has been known to cause problems for people.
[OpenGL core profile version string: 4.6 (Core Profile) Mesa 22.0.0-devel (git-fcc0622 2021-11-30 focal-oibaf-ppa)]

By installing it you probably have complicated the troubleshooting process. If you took a snapshot before installing it, I would recommend reverting to it.

Open a terminal and type DRI_PRIME=1 and then run inxi -Gx and you should get the information for your AMD card in the renderer and then you would not have to guess what to download.

The fact you installed the oibaf-ppa can cause driver interference issues with the amdgpu driver which is need for your AMD card.

Stop. That is outdated software. You have to use the version of the software that matches your current install. What you are doing is the equivalent of adding drivers for Windows XP to your Windows 10 install. That will not work.

Or you just ask here and wait for a response. It may not be necessary to run it from the command line if you have the correct settings I listed under the image in my post.

No, all that indicates is that the developers / company don't have the time and/or resources and/or political will to test/run on other operating systems. At my place of work, we officially support CentOS too, but not Linux Mint. That doesn't stop me running our software under Mint (albeit with some slight tweaks), but it goes unnoticed up the chain of command and our position remains static.

Hi,

= not supported?

In current English or American, some meanings of "to support" are: "to give encouragement and approval to someone or something because you want the person or thing to succeed", "to help someone emotionally or in a practical way".

Concerning software, software support services are defined by:
"Software support services are generally technical support or break/fix services that are delivered for specific software products. These services include revenue derived from long-term technical-support contracts or pay-as-you-go, incident-based support. Software support services typically include remote troubleshooting capabilities, installation assistance and basic usability assistance. Remote troubleshooting capabilities may be delivered via telephone and online communication media or without human assistance through automated means that reside on the customer’s device or are available on the Web.

Software support services may include new product installation services, installation of product updates, migrations for major releases of software, other types of proactive or reactive on-site services, and support for custom application or infrastructure software. Services may be delivered by a product vendor, a consulting firm or third-party software maintainers.

Software products and technologies covered under this category include commercial and custom operating systems, application software, and infrastructure software. Software support services do not include software license code updates and upgrades, which vendors often report as software maintenance."

So, DaVinci Resolve use on Linux Mint is not supported by Blackmagic, both in terms of current English or in terms of software support.

Regards,

MN
