I installed Mint 20.2 xfce on two EUFI Secure Password Desktops. I can't play either purchased or homemade DVDs on the latest version of VLC. I have both an internal DVD/CD optical drive on the Desktops or a USB external DVD drive and neither one will not play DVDs. DVDs will not autoplay or manual play. The autoplay setting I use for Removable Drives and Media->Multimedia->Video CDs/DVDs/Blu-rays->Command>vlc dvd:///dev/sr0.
I get the same result on both Desktops. The internal optical drives are rated for DVDs and I wouldn't think drives in two different Desktops would be bad so that is a low possibility. CD music plays fine.
Attached is the error message I get from inserting a DVD into the external DVD drive.
Thanks for your help.

When trying manual play are you doing this from the Open Media window ?
Media > open disk > DVD or maybe tried /dev/dvd from the drop down box ?
I expect that you've tried this already. I've seen similar behaviour in vlc and solved it with luck and scattershot. Unfortunately those are my main troubleshooting skills.
btw: I can confirm works here in Xfce and auto play

The command suggested is lsusb. You have a typo.
You could try the command lsblk with no dvd in the internal drive, then placing a dvd in the drive and repeating that command. Something should show up under MOUNTPOINT.
Since this problem occurs with both internal drive and usb type external it would make sense to concentrate on the internal drive for now.
The problem happening in vlc could be a red herring if other players like Celluloid also don't work. That said I've seen that error in vlc before.
