On my Mac, I've used GaragaBand, and I also have Logic Pro, but I never heavily used it. On Linux, I'm interested in trying Audacity or something similar.
With all the drama surrounding Audacity and the privacy stuff, I'm wondering if I'd be better off with a fork of Audacity unless there's a version of Audacity that is more privacy-centric.
I'd prefer something with a DEB installer vs building from source (I can build from source, but I'd rather just install it).
Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm on Linux Mint Uma Cinnamon, currently running on a older 2011 iMac.
Thanks!

The problems with Audacity start with version 3. Not sure what version is in the repos for Mint 20.2, but if it is a "version 2 something," it's safe.

Re: Audacity Fork or Privacy-Centric Version
Hi,
There is no drama about Audacity. Versions 3 and above can access internet for two reasons: checking for updates or reporting bugs. This can be controlled by user who can forbid this internet access. Nothing extraordinary, most of OpenSource software such as Firefox or LibreOffice do the same.
I use Audacity flatpak, its version is now 3.1.2.

Re: Audacity Fork or Privacy-Centric Version
If you're used to DAW programs like GarageBand or Logic Pro, I don't think you'll ever be satisfied with Audacity. Audacity is a very good program, I use it, but as a full featured DAW it kinda stinks. Try Ardour.

Re: Audacity Fork or Privacy-Centric Version
Even in Ubuntu 21.10 Audacity version is 2.4.2. So in LM nothing to worry about, at least till spring 2022.
Also 2.4.2 is in Debian 12. So Ubuntu 22.04 needs to reach Debian Unstable to get to 3.x.

Good to know. Thanks for the discussion. I'll give both Audacity and Ardour a try.

Audacity seems to be doing what I need for basic stuff. When I need more, I'll upgrade to Ardour.
