How to rename "Trash" to "Rubbish Bin" on mint 20.X

Post by pauljames77 »

How do you rename "Trash" to "Rubbish Bin" and make it persist?

- I want to rename the "Trash" launcher on the desktop, the "Trash" icon in the NEMO file manager, and everywhere else it is referred to under a user account.

- What is the function of ./local/share/Trash?

- Does the language, region, time format etc. determine what the "bin" is named?

Trash is where files go when you delete them, so you can recover accidentally deleted files. Trash is US English. Rubbish bin is UK English. If you change your language from US English to UK English (in Languages in your menu) it should rename it. And programs will write colour instead of color and so on.

It doesn't change it. The language was set to UK English (system wide) prior to creating the account. I want a rubbish bin not a trash can.

Looking at the translations for Nemo for UK English, it shows Trash is translated to Rubbish Bin: https://translations.launchpad.net/linu ... arch=trash

Double check your language settings on the account. Share the output of command locale run from Terminal, it should show LANG=en_GB.utf8.

If that looks correct, which Linux Mint version specifically are you using? And are any other Trash related texts not translated? Like if you right-click a file in Nemo, it should show "Move to Rubbish Bin" as option and not "Move to Trash" if your locale is set correctly to UK English.

I would like mine to say 'Outhouse' please.

I just flush--completely bypassing 'Outhouse' anyway, so not a biggie. :wink:

Code: Select all

Double check your language settings on the account
- The locale command returned en_GB for all entries.

- Mint 20.2, Cinnamon.

it's the same issue, here as well,

Code: Select all

pierre@Ulyana:~$ locale
LANG=en_AU.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=en_AU:en
LC_CTYPE="en_AU.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_AU.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_AU.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="en_AU.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_AU.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_AU.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="en_AU.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="en_AU.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_AU.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_AU.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_AU.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_AU.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=
pierre@Ulyana:~$
it's annoying, to say the least.

Theres an obscure locale text file with all these strings (and time formats, etc), you should be able to change it there. Unfortunately Im not near a linux machine, so cant help more.

rene provided the solution to this back in April of 2020 for something similar that may be a work around. I have used it to change "Trash" to "Recycle Bin" You would have to change the to your locale/en to au or uk.

Code: Select all

/usr/share/locale/en/LC_MESSAGES to your locale au or uk./nemo.mo >/dev/null
viewtopic.php?f=90&t=316441&p=1792133&h ... h#p1792133
rene wrote: Fri Apr 10, 2020 10:20 am OK, so as to Cinnamon i.e. Nemo, the "Trash" folder on the desktop, and assuming an English language locale, this works:

Code: Select all

echo -e 'msgid "Trash"\nmsgstr "Utterly Irrelevant"' | msgfmt -o - - | sudo tee /usr/share/locale/en/LC_MESSAGES/nemo.mo >/dev/null
to after a reboot (restarting Cinnamon is not enough) have renamed "Trash" on the desktop.

Both my LANG and LC_MESSAGES are "en_US.UTF-8" and my LANGUAGES is "en_US"; see the output of locale in your case. Clearly you need to pick another locale than "en" in /usr/share/locale/en/LC_MESSAGES/ if you're using a nonenglish locale, but frankly, how in my case "en_US" maps to just "en" is not clear to me so there seems to be a somewhat involved mapping here. It is supposed that you'll be able to identify the correct /usr/share/locale/*/LC_MESSAGES/nemo.mo -- but careful that you first check whether or not a "nemo.mo" already exists in your case lest you'd override it with the minimal Trash one.

I.e., if you break it, you get to keep both pieces...

Depends on the type of bin.
We call these "Wheelie Bins"

But we can call standard bins "Bin" "Trash" "Rubbish" "Rubbish Bin" "Trash Bin"

The many problems of localized English.
