SOLVED! Gimp disappeared and had to be reinstalled

Post by otlichnik73 »

Hi, everyone! Just wondering if anyone else experienced this, and what I can learn from this: I noticed that Gimp disappeared completely from the menu (although the files were still there in /etc/gimp and /usr/share/gimp. I had to reinstall it, which worked fine. Noticed that the new installation was a flatpak. Any comments, anything I need to learn form all this? Cheers!

I noticed that Gimp disappeared completely from the menu
That is unexpected behavior. If you used the menu search bar and it didn't show up, that would concern me a little bit.

All versions of Gimp that I have tried work pretty good. Sometimes the floating toolbars get in my way, but the program works well. I don't think I have tried the Flatpak, but I probably should change to it.

Could it just be the difference in naming in the menu? It's listed as GNU Image Manipulation Program instead of GIMP these days.

Not if you using the menu search bar and searching for GIMP. GNU Image Manipulation Program shows up.

Did you remove any dependencies GIMP requires?

Using ldd /bin/gimp in the terminal will show what files GIMP needs.
PC: Intel i5 6600K @4.5Ghz, 1TB NVMe SSD, 32GiB 3000Mhz DDR4, GTX1080 running Mint 21.3
Laptop: Asus UM425UAZ running LMDE 6

Maybe that should be:

Code: Select all

ldd /usr/bin/gimp
At least in my case (LM 19.3).

Yes you are right. I subsequently fixed it by trying to install from command line, and getting error message about dependencies, and re-installing those
