Performance problem since last updates

Post by frankthegerman »

As a matter of general curiosity... has anything dramatically changed in the last couple of updates? I suddenly seem to notice serious performance problems on my laptop. Admittedly, it is an ancient Samsung r519 (dual core) but i see rather strange problems. When i open more than 2 or 3 online tabs, everything slows down to a crawl, video playback on Youtube etc. seems to nearly cripple the whole system and what really baffles me, is the observation that the cursor seems to need ages to react. I hover it over a "X" or try highlighting something on an online text and it takes ages for it to show and react. Have done something wrong with the last couple of updates or is it time to head to the shop for some slightly newer hardware.
Any help would be much appreciated

Re: Performance problem since last updates

Post by motoryzen »

I have experienced no problems since any of the recent updates involving the Kernels. The same for other things/programs I use.

*********Have you done any timeshift snapshot backups? Try restoring back to one of them before today or before yesterday to see if the problem is resolved

If it is, then ( and Yes I realize this could be very tedious) when you are presented with the next few days worth of updates, do just one at a time to see which may be the culprit. After you confirm performance stays good after each individual update ( regardless of which item that update is for), do a time shift backup

..BUT...don't keep more than 5 backups. Timeshift is weird and I don't recall the direct ...sensible reasons why via so many conversations I've read on here among the much more experienced Linux users such as smg, rene, AndyMH, Kadaitchaman, Smurphos, etc etc . ** and ensure those Timeshift backups are targeting a separate drive...sincerely. Don't do like so many did and accidentally fill up your root directory and then wonder why you can't boot into LM.******

@frankthegerman Thank you. I don't see anything obviously bad, except your PC being old and your CPU temperatures being very high. I'd say it's time for new hardware and retire this one for light/offline home usage, but if the performance issues were not present until recently, then that's definitely strange. Sometimes a kernel or driver update can do that, the only thing I can suggest is to restore with Timeshift and see if the performance problems go away.

I noticed that the cpu temperature is 57 degrees. Was your pc doing anything else when you did the inxi command? (back in april your cpu temp was 43).
Maybe dust blocking the ventholes in the pc?
If you think the issue is solved, edit your original post and add the word solved to the title.

Yes i was looking at the academia.edu page (Sorry, i do a lot of text search/research in old texts relating to methods of application of herbs). That's when i started to think that i need to do something about this as it took ages for a .pdf file to load and open. A process which thus far was admittedly not speedy on my laptop but certainly not as slow as i experienced it over the last few days

Yes, something seems to be up but I don't know how to troubleshoot.

I have a 11th Gen Intel i7 with 40GB of memory and I've been watching videos on it in complete silence for the last year but now the fan is spinning up and making a racket any time I watch a video. It doesn't matter if I'm in Firefox or Brave browser, it now does it in both whether it's a Youtube video or a Rumble video. It also does it when I watch a video directly from my laptop's drive. Htop just lists Cinnamon at the top for CPU usage, I don't really understand how to read it beyond that. Previously the only time I ever heard the fan running was mainly during updates or while actually video editing/processing.

I recently updated to 20.3 Cinnamon and at some point after that is when I first noticed. When it goes from total silence to an increasing wooshing sound I have a frantic sensation like I have to throw my laptop outside quickly before it blows... but typically I just pause the video.

Yes this sounds all too familiar. Choppy videos, files that need ages to load or even sometimes online file searches seem to take a bit to finish. Am i hitting the performance limit of an old laptop now or is there still things left that could be tweaked??

I see:
Pentium dual core - not that bad
4GB RAM - enough
Intel GMA integrated GPU (may be even worse than mine) - bottleneck
Hard Drive - old and slow magnetic hard drive - I would recommend even the cheapest SSD you can find

Try using Mate or Xfce - fresh install over update
Install Oibaf Mesa Drivers

Oh, and don't be crazy with too many tabs in the browser and apps running in the background. Even if won't eat up more than 3GB of your RAM it'll make your CPU struggle. Modern web technologies are a layers of bloat. Use adblocker...

Yes um aware of the processor bottle neck. The HDD was an impulse buy as my "old" one was literally on its way put. Maybe I should invest in a SSD. Any recommendations?

Your CPU is actually pretty ok, the Intel GMA GPU is the bottleneck. You can read about these old integrated graphics chips on the Wikipedia. They are called 'decelerators' for a reason.

I have AData SU650 120GB SSD which was the cheapest one available couple of years ago and it still works fine, SMART doesn't show anything wrong with the drive and I don't experience any data loss. Just get the cheap Sata SSD with the capacity of your choice. 120GB may be not enough for an average data hoarders. Buying a high-end SSD for such an old machine is nonsense since it won't be able to use the full potential of the cheapest one. Also get an external USB case for your old HDD to use it for backing up your important data, because if SSD dies the data are lost forever.
