Mint 20.3 Freezes

Post by Taildragger »

Problem: system freezes frequently (~three times per day), the cursor moves but nothing happens when I right or left click. Have to hold the power button down for 8 seconds and reboot.

A friend gave me his old HP Envy x360 convertible laptop, 15 inch screen, with a AMD Ryzen 5 2500U with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx. It has a 1TB drive (standard) and 8GB Ram. It was running fine.

I split the hard drive using Windows Disk Management, about 450 gigs on each side. I then dual booted Mint 20.3, making three partitions,

/root 30Gb
swap 16Gb
and /home (the rest, about 430Gb)

It boots fine, grub menu fine, loads fine, about the only thing is setup Firefox with my old bookmarks, and Thunderbird with my email, and put one file in the Pictures file so it will have a screensaver with my pictures scrolling through. Everything works fine, except it freezes, (and a few times specifically it freezes when I scroll through the pictures when I load them into Image Viewer.

From searching the net for the problem, I suspect:

drivers

BIOS/UEFI

Ryzen AMD issue

c6 New to me, (may have been overclocked, don’t know, I’ve never done that sort of thing)

Can’t imagine the amount of swap area is the problem as the recommendation was 1-1 ½ times the amount of RAM

Thanks in advance, I’ll try to post the inxi (saw that on another thread)

System freezes with early generation Ryzens were unfortunately a common issue. Here are some tips that may help clear those Fix system freezing trouble with AMD Ryzen CPU's.

Let us know if any of those help.
